Well, when FishboneNC told me my newly aquired 55 Gallon Aquarium tank would probably not work for a growing dragon I was pretty bummed. Having just spent $80 bucks on craigslist on what I thought would be a nice enclosure I was stubborn and thinking I would try it anyway. Then I broke out the tape measure and started to realize that yea . . . 13" isn't alot of room for an adult to turn around in.
Yes I'm a noob, yes I thought this would work
Well, reality hit and I realized that I was gonna need something a little better. FishboneNC said if he could do it all over he would of gone with a custom viv. A viv? What the hells a . . . oh . . . ok . . . that's what a vivarium is. I see, I see. Sooooo back to craigslist (I still have the 55 gallon if anybody in the East Bay is interested.)
So, I searched craigslist for vivariums and found too good ads for decent sized vivs. Both ads were nearly a week old so I wasn't getting my hopes up. The first going for $100 was taken and the second going for $150 was, well wouldn't you know it, still available. The image on craigslist was taken with the flourescent lights on so I really had no idea what to expect. It looked nice enough so my cousin and I drove a half hour to Pleasanton to pick it up. The neighborhood this guy lived in was just short of being a gated community and probablly could easily have been. All these houses were ridiculously nice and were probablly worth around $5 mill at the least. We were a little surprised but cool. So yea, I'll wrap this up by saying it's deals like this that have me head over heels in love with craigslist. I went from a janky tank to a real viv (something I didn't think I would ever own). So without further adue, take a look at what $150 can get you on Craigslist . . . on a good day. Be sure to scroll all the way down for fully assembled and lit pics.
Two light fixtures, one on each side of the viv with vents in the top corners. Flourescent lighting is installed in the top/front. Not visible from the outside.
Thermometers on both sides, one with a hygrometer.
We had to break it down to transport, it is big and heavy!
Goodies included in the $150 price!
Vents, insulation.
Finally, I present to you my new vivarium
Beautiful, no?
