Hello,

There has been issues like that in the past with silkworms & hornworms, both having bacteria like that which made them ill. Then they did affect the dragon with health problems, etc that were basically unexplained.
Have your silkworms been dying or having problems?
How is your girl doing now, has she improved a lot?

Really??? Why isn't this more known about? I just started breeding my own. No mine are little tiny things just hatching :) Not feeding yet. But used to buy a lot... Can you tell me more what you know about this? She is doing fine, eating and still having an issue with her veggies... Sometimes will eat on her own, sometimes wants the syringe. Her feces smell good. Which helps me believe that she is no longer infected. She does seem to like the cool end more than before, maybe because she was sick for a long time? Do you know how long it takes to get a sick dragon from worms? Like months, days, weeks etc? I would love to know what you know about this!

Also did the other dragons ever get treated that you knew got infected and were they able to find the negative gram rod as well? And did they ever recover fully? Thanks

Hello,

It hasn't apparently hit for awhile. I am not sure what the source is, but maybe 5-7 years ago there were some breakouts of it & the silkworms had some die offs. A few people had sent some to the lab for analysis but there just isn't much reported on it.
Usually people don't think to question the feeders most of the time. If you are breeding your own now, you will be able to see what goes on with them. Perhaps it could also be the feed too, which could have been contaminated somehow & made them sick. There are several variables it could have been.
I am glad she is doing better now! It seemed to affect dragons which had immune system problems, like the Adeno & couldn't fight off certain bacterias very well.

Well the research is not that old now we know what is causing it. I would love to know labs that will test for negative gram rods if you happen to know any. I am trying to get in touch with a lab in Texas to see if they will do it. As it is very hard to test for, and not everyone has the equipment to test for it, and don't know many people that test bugs, but even in fecals it don't show up unless they run that test. I will do more digging, I would really like to figure it all out. Anyways if you ever hear of anyone getting sick they need Metronidazol as it is a facultative anaerobe I believe. I will know more when the report is finished. They took my lab work and fecal information and are trying to link them as well with all the info they have. I am reading that it is very easy to infect these worms as it seems to be a husbandry issue and people not raising them right in wrong conditions are responsible for this bacteria. I think don't quote me on it. I will keep you updated with the report. Thanks :)

Hello,

You are welcome. Geez, it seems like there is always something, right? Definitely let us know when you get the lab results back.
Yes, the Metronidazole/Flagyl is good for protozoans, flagelletes, etc. I hope she is feeling much better now!
I agree, the husbandry is most likely the culprit. Silkworms are not hard to keep, but do need specific cleanliness to do well with low humidity & moisture, too.
Did you try the Research Associates Lab? They are in Dallas, but not sure if they test bugs or not.

I am pretty sure my dragon has gout her acid levels were at 8.8 and protein at the higher level end. I ran through 1,000 dollars last time and really am in need of some Allopurinol. I don't have a working car right now. Is there any way I can get some? Somewhere? I am going on her last test, but she is acting the same again, and she became very bloated and swollen. I am giving her fluid by mouth and cherry juice diluted, that is all I can get unless there something else a walmart or some nutrition store sells? I am driving a mobility scooter around town and need to get my girl some help. She was cut back to a lower protein diet, but I guess not enough I just don't get it. Her husbandry is perfect and she is still eating greens on her own, which took a long time for her to do again after this last time she got ill. I also am giving her electrolite powder, probotics where the heck can I get this Allopurinol without a vet?

Hello Melissa,

I just saw your post here. I had not connected it until now. :D
Were you able to find the black cherry extract yet at a Health food store?
The link I sent for the allopurinol, it did not require a prescription correct? Let me know & I do have another site or so we could check.
The 8.8mg/dl for the uric acid is starting to get a bit elevated, I agree. She is well hydrated?

Connect the dots la la la :)
I am trying to find it, but it's not just black cherry it's mixed. I am trying to hydrate her as her last urate wasn't great again. Using some electolite powder and also slushy with greens, she has been eating them, but obviously not enough to keep her hydrated enough. She seems dehydrated again like last time, I am bathing more again and also giving her some diluted cherry juice right now until I can find the other stuff? is that okay? it's 100 percent. Also I have to go try to get a debit card to order on the site. I wish I knew if it worked for sure because it costs 5 dollars to get the debit card from Walmart... But I am going there later to get dog food for the pup and will pick one up and let you know :)

I found capsules at 250 mg at GNC how would I measure that out for a 607 pound dragon? :/ and how do I keep it etc?

Hello Melissa,

You found capsules with black cherry powder?
Since it is not toxic, you can take just a small pinch of powder daily & mix it with water & give to her orally. That way she gets all of it instead of sprinkling it onto her food.
There is no set dose on it but normally on most supplements I tend to dose it at 15mg/kg. So, if you want to mix it to an exact dose let me know & I can help you with compounding it, etc.

Wow, I'm assuming you meant 607 grams, but she's still a big dragon! Is she still doing better?

It is this? Is this okay? http://www.amazon.com/GNC-SuperFoods-Black-Cherry-Bottle/dp/B009VGKEW8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1439421517&sr=8-4&keywords=black+cherry+extract+capsules

She is starting to breath funny again her beard will puff a little as she breaths. I am so lost here. I have a mobility scooter and no way to get to the city to the vet. She seems to be relapsing from whatever she had before. All of the symptoms are coming back. Are you still able to view the old blood work? What do you think I should do? I would hate to give her baytril if something is wrong with her kidneys, I don't want her to suffer like she did last time, she was on a bunch of meds, but she did get better. But it was a rough ride. I do have silver. I don't know how good that stuff is as I read stuff that someone posted and now doubt it. Not sure.. I have baytril and metro here and do you know how long metcam is good for? I have had it for 3 months since she has been sick. I don't know if I want to just do the whole med thing over since it worked before?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
