Stopped by my local PJ's Pets franchise within the last hour and what did I see? 14 Bearded Dragon hatchlings in an 18x18x24 enclosure....and I do mean HATCHLINGS....all under 3 inches in length and many already with signs of injury. Missing toes, missing tails and biting at each other.
I wasn't about to make a scene (with my 12 yr old son who was with me), but I asked the elderly reptile guy how old they were and he said "they just hatched at the beginning of this week".
When I asked if they were too young to be sold at this point he said "well not really...they are pretty hardy little guys...but the great part about selling them now though is it's great value for the price ($66.00 CDN each) and you get to see them grow from almost the time they were born."
While this was going on, my son who was looking into the enclosure suddenly stands up and starts pointing out all the injuries he can see on the baby beardies. Without missing a beat, the reptile clerk says "yes that's a normal part of them competing for food, but they will all be okay." Then came my moment of pride when my son replies "but the bearded dragon books you sell here says it means you're not feeding them enough...that they can die from those injuries. And the books you have here say you're not supposed to have them altogether in one cage like that and that the cage is too small and where is the heat lamp? I can go get the book if you want to show you."
With that, the reptile guy turns to me and says "you son is certainly quite the reader I gather" to which I replied "yes, and he's right" at which point the reptile guys says "let me know if you need any assistance" and he immediately turned and walked away.
