    Humidity question

a little bit of water sprayed in the tank isn't going to make a difference in humidity. if you have (good, digital) humidity guages, you can tell if it's causing any significant humidity spikes. and if your humidity is really low, say, below 20%, you might want to do extra baths or sprays to...

    Lighting Help for Newbies (:

what kind and brand of UVB light are you using? what kind of thermometer are you using, and where is it positioned? what are your ambient room temps? a 150W lamp should be plenty to heat up the warm side of a 40gal, unless your room temps are really, really cold. my guess is the thermometer...

    humid hides for beardies

not necessarily. over a long enough period of time it will equalize, but for a period of a few days, a properly constructed humid hide will create a higher humidity microclimate within that hide, with little moisture escape to the enclosure as a whole. when it starts to dry out, you remoisten...

    humid hides for beardies

has anyone here ever used a humid hide for their beardie? i know other lizard species (leopard geckos, crested geckos, skinks) benefit from having a humid hide to aid shedding, so i was considering giving one to my beardie to see if it helped him shed more easily. i've noticed my dragon can take...

    New forum slot.

that's the advantage of having a separate subforum, you can "quarantine" those discussions, so to speak, in their own area, while the main threads can remain a place to promote the tried-and-true best practices that are commonly recommended. after all, those same practices began as an experiment...

    I struck gold….errrrr….greens!

Slight noob questions for a good enclosure.

ok that should be fine. there is a 36x18x12 version also so it's good to clarify.

    New forum slot.

i'd like to second the suggestion for an advanced section in the forum. lately there's been a lot of topics and questions that have come up that are more advanced or controversial, and they often devolve into personal attacks and flame wars that detract from the original thread or topic. one of...

New Beardie with Serious Coccidia and ADV Great update!

considering the beardie's age, and the conditions he was kept in at the breeder, it's almost certain the coccidia was already present in his system. the feeders should not be the problem, especially if proper sanitary procedures are being followed: no sharing of feeders between enclosures, no...

    I struck gold….errrrr….greens!

i've used those in the past too, my only complaint with them is the pre-chopped greens tend to spoil more quickly than i can use them. unchopped they seem to last longer.

Slight noob questions for a good enclosure.

the main thing i wanted to mention was, i would recommend getting the 36x18x18 enclosure instead of 36x18x12. 12" isn't really ideal height for a beardie, 18" i would consider minimum, 24" even better. dragons are arboreal and like some vertical height for climbing and basking. at 12", it will...

    UVB lights - help?

i have joined that group since i've seen you mention it, but haven't really read much there yet. i have the solarmeter 6.2 which just displays uW, vs the 6.5 that displays UVI, but UV index is based off uW/cm2 so it's just different ways of expressing the same measurement. i know the two meters...

    yahoo article on beardies

no surprise. some of it is probably carelessness on the owners' part, and no doubt some is due to the typical misinformed pet stores who don't tell customers about the dangers of salmonella when they buy a reptile. i wonder how this turned into an "outbreak" though. probably some kid with a...

Is it ok to buy a Bearded Dragon off Craigs List?

i wouldn't recommend it. unless you're experienced with bearded dragons and can make an informed determination of its health based on a visual inspection, which i'm guessing is not the case if this is your first beardie, then you just don't know what you're getting yourself into. like they say...

    light quality question

according to the link, they only put out 50 uW of UVB (and doesn't say at what distance that is), which is not enough for beardies. a reptisun 10.0 bulb will put out twice as much UVB, which is in the range that is healthiest for a fluorescent tube bulb for a BD enclosure.

    UVB lights - help?

i just went outside and measured the UVB from my backyard and got a reading of 250uW/cm2. when clouds pass over it gets down to around 100-150uW/cm2. in their natural habitat in the australian outback they can easily see exposure above 300uW/cm2. now, if you're using a tube bulb like the...

Advice on ways to "tame" our new pet

just a few questions on his setup. 3 feet is a bit tall for a bearded dragon, how are his lights set up? what kind of UVB bulb is he using and how is it set up? with a 3 foot tall cage, you want to make sure he can get close enough to the UVB bulb to be able to get good UVB exposure, depending...

    UVB lights - help?

according to that link, the bulb only emits 25 uW/cm2 (though it doesn't say at what distance). that's not nearly enough UVB for a beardie. better levels would be about 100uW/cm2 (constant exposure) or periodic exposure up to 300uW/cm2 on the basking site. also, sitting on top of the screen...
