You should be ok going with 1/4 size crickets. My little guys was on the 1/4 sized crickets when he was a month and 6 days old (when I got him).

Definitely try the hand warmers. I picked up some at Lowes the day before the storm. They come in packs of 10. They also have foot warmers.

You may also want to try feeding him squash (butternut). I have read that it is known to assist when they are having this issue.

I am feeding him crickets as well. The Phoenix worms are available in a dish to him up until 2-3 hours before lights out. He is offered crickets (as many as he will eat) 3 times a day.

I don't believe that you have anything to worry about. Gleeok my little bearded dragon does the same thing as well when he is shedding on his face. I noticed he does this more when he is shedding around his nostrils. I can imagine it probably feels like a blocked nose.
