Im so tired of people withholding insects. It is their main damn meal. If a bearded dragon will not eat salads let them be. This is abuse withholding insects that is their main diet. I agree with the breeder. Bearded dragons are not iguanas. Iguanas will eat salads but a bearded dragon should never eat salads. It is not their main diet.
Salads should only be used if insects are not available.

Hi

How do I get my 10 month old bearded dragon to egg fruit he will not touch it tried putting peppers all 3 colors of them strawberries blueberries the lot but he won't eat them. He does eat his greens and roaches everyday. Just wondering how I can get him to eat some fruit? I think he still looks great without eating them but would like him to start

Any help would be really appreciated

Thank you

Hey, sorry if I bother you but today is day 7 with no insects and besides yesterday when my beardy took some salad from my hand after his full body shed, I had no luck today getting him to eat salad.

Should I just continue or is there any other advice to proceed from here? My beard looks very healthy and active although he had no insects for one week.

I am getting concerned because he does not get any calcium and vitamins...

....Ignorance.

Which is extremely dangerous. Especially when false information gets spread. But with this wonderful forum they've just joined. They share in our opportunity to learn how to better care for these wonderful creatures.

Fruit is something that I believe could be perfectly left out of there diet all together if they don't seem to care for it. And no harm should came to them. As it isn't something they should be eating much of anyway.

However, if you'd like to try to persuade him. I'd try blending up/mashing the berries to make like a salad dressing and put it on his favorite greens. See if he'll eat that. And once he gets used to the flavor you can try him on the actual fruit itself cut up so he can smell them.

But just remember to go slow on it. This is NOT something they can eat daily!

Well, he had no interest in the alfalfa sprouts. But now at the end of the day I sprinkled a few meal worms on them and he was kind of forced to eat some because alfalfa spouts are almost impossible to miss! And then they get tangled up so they ended up pulling more into his mouth kind of like spaghetti. Definitely the most of any veggie I've gotten him to eat. No way he'd have gone for it unenticed.

If you don't get any more experienced advice from our moderators. I'd suggest trying just the same technique. Dust a few small insects and place them in a finely minced salad to add some movement. And see if he'll go for it now. At the very least you'll Rev up his metabolism which is now after 7 days at a complete stand still, and might be adding to his lack of appetite. I haven't given an insect every single day like my vet suggested. ( I skipped like 1 or 2) But enough days where I'm not having the same concerns yours struggling with, as I know he's gotten trace calcium/vitamins.

i can't remember if you said he will take water from a dropper/syringe. but if he will, you could get some liquid calcium and vitamins and give them to him mixed with the water. that way you know he is getting them regardless of what he eats. we had to switch to this method because our guy refuses to eat anything with the powders on it.

Well he's still not eating today.....and honestly I don't know how much longer I can keep going! He's so small already and though he's active. He has lost weight. I might try going back to bugs and maybe trying baby food. Maybe after a while he'd get used to the flavor of veggies.

I'm so two minded though. Part of me wants to keep going since he's already gone so far and the other half of me says we can try again later this is too much. He's much too underweight as it is. ahhhhhhh

I feel you, I hade the same thoughts but today he ate some salad on his own what gave me hope. I mixed the calcium and d3 powder with some water in a spray bottle and dropped it on his nose and he drank a decent amount.

I hope tomorrow I can end this, I plan to wait couple hours after I turn on his lights and then place the salad, when he eats like today on his own, and hopefully more, I will give him some bugs.

Perhaps it will just have to be an ongoing battle with him. But though he never ate enough to be called a meal he tried more things this week than in the whole month before! So that is definitely to be celebrated. I think tomorrow I will let him win. And try again another time. Let me know how yours does!

I hope this teaches you a lesson: not to withhold bugs. You are basicly silently letting this poor little guy starve to death. If he dies it is basicly your fault not providing the bugs he needs for basking. People like you should not have a bearded dragon as a pet in the first place by withholding bugs and expecting to eat a salad on his own and it is unacceptable. I dont have a bearded dragon but it upsets me that people do these kind of things to a bearded dragon and expect it to eat a salad on their own by withholding bugs. The original poster needs to be investigated for animal cruelty.

Ha ha ha....okay Morton you have alot of feelings. And I'm sorry you feel a need to keep reading things that upset you. That is probably really unhealthy for you as well.

I don't feel bad at all for my choices. I stand by them 100% and I will do it again to him in the future. Tough love does not equal abuse. But trolling is....

Well good thing you don’t because the vitamins, calcium, minerals, and hydration would all be lacking with your dragon if it wasn’t getting any greens.
