Ok so this is Yuri, i honestly had no idea what i was walking into when I got him. =/ I was just getting over my Chinese water dragons death, i had him for four years and he was fat healthy and the sweetest little thing you ever met. but I woke up one morning fixed him his usual grub, couple of crickets and some veggies, and i noticed that his color was unusually grey. vet said they were not sure what happened to him =/ wasn't unhealthy just his heart stopped and that was it. but anyway, so a few days later, i get a call from my friend from work if I had room for a bearded dragon, I told her I did and asked why she was looking to be rid of him, she said she had way to many bearded dragons to care for this one was her sons, and he was just not taking anymore intrest in him and it was mainly because he was scared of him after his last chomping on the fingers. apparently it took them several minutes to get him to break free and her sons finger actually had to be stitched because the dragon was shaking his head while clamping. I was a bit worried, i never one time had my previous lizard even attempt to bite, i could open his mouth and put a finger in and he wouldn't even bite, so to get one that was a little more frisky concerned me just a tad.
So I decided that I really wanted a new pet, and Yuri was Free, so I said yes went to meet them and met the new guy. god he was bigger then i imagined yet something struck me as odd. I've been around enough lizards to know when one is just plain scared, or plain aggressive and this one had both. I found out after investigating that her sons friend would actually torture the thing when he wasn't at home and his friend was watching him. He would dangle keys in his cage and Yuri would bite at the keys and it of course hurt the poor guy, I'm surprised he doesn't have broke or missing teeth. But he said before then he wasn't mean at all he could hold him play with him and love him but now he just didn't want to even put a hand in there to feed him after yuri took a chunk out of him. so with that being said Yuri took the personality of the dominant aggressor, because he wasn't being handled anymore and because he was tortured by dangling keys anytime someone would put a hand in his cage he went back to the keys and would try attacking your fingers almost instantly even if you were on the opposite side of the cage he would huff up and nod his head, if you didn't move it he would walk over there and snap at you ( no joke man). i think the dominance came from the fact her son would freak and pull his hand out quickly the dragon learned that he was scared of him, and that meant he was dah boss. So I took the guy and our future was sealed.
And then came feeding time.... well i didn't really know what to do I was scared to put my hand in but at the same time he had to eat, and it was almost as if he knew that I was about to feed him because he took a walk over to his food dish and sat on it, so the only way I could even put the food in his cage was I had to reach in and grab his bowl. my first thought was oh you evil little thing you. So despite the fear of a possible bite I called no guts no glory and put my hand in. he tried to bite, but all i did was take a finger from my other hand place it on the back of his head and made him back away from the bowl trying to get my finger that was on his head. once i got him away from the bowl i picked it up and with my other hand still over his head i put some gentle pressure on the back of his head forcing him to lower his posture so he would at least lay his head down or sit which he did quite a bit and now when I have to do it he almost instantly plops flat on his belly and face on the floor like man... ( note doing this took several weeks to get him to learn to respect the hand =/ so now when my hand comes in unless he has an attitude he just moves out of the way)
when it came time to picking him up and getting him to respect my hand to where he wouldn't even open his mouth at it unless it contained food, he was ready. it took him a couple of days to get used to being handled again and all in all hes about the sweetest and funniest little guy you will ever meet. it was poor handling in the past that i think drove him to this madness. but all in all Yuri is sweet to me. he has never bitten me once despite all his tries, and now he doesn't even attempt to with me but anyone else he will get upset. I think maybe he recognizes my hand by my ring, or by smell I'm not sure, but i'm the only one who can pick him up without him getting scared and mad. heck he chases off my dog when hes set down on the floor to get some exercise so in a way i now have a guard lizard. haha, but one thing still confuses me when I first got him i noticed he had strange coloration to his tale. in one part of his tail on the top scales it appears to be a blueish green scale coloring. I mean it seriously looks as though someone took some paint and painted it on him, he doesn't have that color anywhere else but there, and i've tried scrubbing it in his baths with a soft tooth brush, nothing... hes shed and it's still there, it really is strange color spot, i'll be sure to uplad a picture of it one of these day's for you to see. but yes yuri still will take a lot of care and work, but i will always make time for my pal, because theres no greater feeling then knowing you above everyone else, has gained his trust, and a couple days ago, for the first time he actually crawled onto my hand and made his way to my hoodie where he poked his head out from my hood on my shoulder and fell asleep, was so cute.
