Hello everyone, so I am nearly 100% sure that Stellar (8 month old beardy from PETSMART) has yellow fungus. I DO NOT want to loose my baby to a dumb fungus! I need help! Have any of you gone through this with your beardy? And opinions on what I should do? I already have a vet appointment scheduled for 2 days from now.

At first I thought he was just shedding, so I waited, but the yellow never went away. I joined this forum and began researching and now I am DEVESTATED!! I can't bear to think that Stellar is sick!

Trust me, I know how horrible this is, but all I need is support from fellow beardy lovers! Could you just confirm my suspicion by looking at the following pics?

(that is not fungus on the side of his belly , the picture just coloured it funny)

(sorry, he would not stay still)

Hello,

That is most likely going to be fungal, just based on the picture. So it is just on his tail/leg area & not his belly then?
You can get some lamisil or monistat cream to put on those areas daily to help out for now. Do you have any probiotic such as acidophiliz or non dairy soy yogurt to give to him?
You can bathe him, but keep it to a minimum as too much moisture contributes to fungus.
Stellar is a great name for him, too.
Is he eating normally?
Let us know how the vet visit goes.

Hello Tracie,

Thank you for the fast reply! He seems to be eating fine, but just this morning he had a slightly runny poop. It is NOT on his belly, just the vent area.

It is around 9:00pm right now, so I can not go and get any probiotics or lamisil, but I will for sure tomorrow!

Is there a chance it is a different type of fungus that is not as deadly as yellow fungus?

Thanks,
Stellar's owner

Hello,

Sure, it can wait until tomorrow. :D
They can do a skin rub/culture & send it to the lab to determine the type of fungus. Maybe it wont be yellow fungus, as there are several other types of fungus' it could be. If you catch it quickly then it can be treated easily.
At least he is eating well though. They can do a fecal on him, too just to see if he may have worms or parasites also.

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to let you all know that I went to the vet today. The vet told me that it could be either bacterial of fungal. He said that if it is in fact yellow fungus, then it is in the early stages and we can beat it! I have dabbed betadine on his infected areas with a sponge. I plan on a betadine bath followed by lamisil cream later tonight.

The vet also said that it is not necessary at this point to do a skin test or fecal. If it gets ANY worse, then he will do further tests. Trust me, if I feel it is getting worse in ANY way, I will take him back.

Yesterday, I took apart his entire tank and soaked it all in hot water and dish soap (I didn't have any bleach :p). It soaked for 3 hours and I scrubbed it down with a 1/1000 bleach to water solution (went out and bought bleach). I am waiting for it to be FULLY dry because I understand humidity promotes fungus growth. Currently I have a brand new repticarpet with a cardboard hide and I made an IMPRESSIVE :D basking spot out of dish towels (for him to grip), cardboard, and tape.

Anymore suggestions?

Thanks,
Stellar's owner

Hi there....it sounds like you're taking all the right steps, and I hope that he makes a complete recovery ! Only other suggestion I would make is to use nrewspaper instead of carpet. I think the carpet might hold the fungus, where the newspaper can be thrown out daily or even more often if need be.

Hey Stellar,

Glad it's in the early stages, good luck hun, mine died from two types of fungus' and one of those fungals was Yellow Fungus. I'm with AHBD on the changing substrate to newspaper or paper towels (I was gonna say that AHBD). Good luck and wish Stellar the best of recovery!

Hello,

Terrific news, hopefully it isn't yellow fungus. I believe it looks like it is very early stage, too so you should be able to beat it with proactive measures.
Be sure to use a probiotic also, in case it is fungal, to help promote good healthy gut bacteria & to balance his system out also.
Let us know how he is doing.

Hi Tracie!
Stellar seems to be doing great. Over the weekend he shed a little and some of the yellow around his vent peeled off. There is still some remaining on his back leg and top of his tail. What are some examples of probiotics? Yogurt?

Soy yogurt, benebac and acidophilus are some of the probiotics to use while on meds.

Hope it goes well.
What if he is not on meds? Right now he just has topical solutions (betadine and lamasil)...

You shouldn't need probiotics while on topical solutions.
I didn't when I had my dragon on solutions not medication.
Just dry him off really well after bath before applying lamisil.
That's all you should have to do, really. Unless he's on meds for YFungus then you don't need any probiotics.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
