Yellow foot.. WITH PICTURE

Hey, I'm a new beardie owner and need your help!

When I bought my little boy home he had a black toe where his sibling had nibbled on it.
It took a while to fall off but I wasn't too worried as I know most beardies are missing them.
Thing is, now it's fallen off his foot's turning yellow.
Thought if anyone would know what it is it'd be you lot! ;)
Would appreciate the help.

Here's a picture of Phoenix - it's the back right foot.

Thankyou.

Hello there,

Was this picture taken after the toe fell off? Have you been treating the toe in any way or did you just leave it? There may be some sort of infection from the injury so it might be a good idea to get an appointment with the vet before an infection can spread any further!

Hope hes doing good otherwise,
T

I can't see the picture really well but you could look into Yellow Fungus Disease just in case. It is a fungus that causes the skin to discolor and die. I think the beautifuldragons site and a page about it. Good luck and hope he's feeling better soon.

Hello there
Sorry to hear about the little guys foot.A close up picture would be more helpful however from what I can see it looks like 2 more toes are going necrotic and his foot does appear infected. He is in need of antibiotic meds for the foot and I am thinking possibly the other toes are going to have to be removed. If left untreated the gangrene will continue up the leg and he can become septic so this doesnt look like something that can be left without vet care.I would still like to see a closer picture howvere just to rule out yellow fungus.

Hey, so we've just got back from the vets (who was Australian!). He told me he didn't want to prescribe anti-biotics to a young'n unless absolutely necessary because there are none specifically for reptiles, so it's pretty much guesswork. Also that they can build up to toxic ammounts pretty quickly.

Phoenix'll most likely loose both his 3rd and 4th toe (I don't mind - i love his imperfections!) soon enough, but if there are any changes, such as swelling, then to bring him straight back and go from there. He advised me to give him time (as reptiles take a while to heal) and let Mother Nature work her magic.

Thankyou all for your advice, I thought I'd post a close up picture for you all anyway :)

Hope it's clear enough!

baytril is most commonly used in a case like this and has been tested on reptiles. You just have to know how to dose it properly.. So I would honestly seek another opinion if possible. Your dragon could potentially loose the whole foot or leg if not taken care of.. It doesnt look too swollen right now. but most likely will start to swell in a few days. thats the infection running up the leg.
I would also recommend neosporin without pain reliever on the toes. this may help prevent the infection from spreading up.

yup yup definatly baytril...i have some at my house for ym old beadie that passed away that the vet gave me ..and i was going to discrad it but my mom is a vet tech at aplace that does not care for reptiles and she told me not to because baytril has a good shelf life..so getting some is deffinatly worth while..as you cna use it later on if needed,,

Hello
Great that you got him to the vet and yes I agree those toes will fall off most likely.I actually do understand the vets reluctance to dose meds as even Baytril is very difficult on a baby beardies system.Since he isnt prescribing meds though you must take great care in watching for any major color change or swelling in the foot. They can sometimes heal themselves but not always and if the infection continues dont hesitate.Keep us posted on the little guy.

Hello,

I agree with Vicky, Baytril is hard on dragons that are young, but, it looks like that foot is getting infected. I am worried about that. so you need to really watch that foot. Baytril is quite safe as long as it is dosed properly according to his weight, it should be not be much of a problem. If the toes just start to harden & become necrotic to the point of falling off, you can treat them as needed.
Those toes don't look too good, & will likely come off.
Make sure the discoloring does not travel up his foot & to his leg because if it does that means infection is traveling & needs attention.

He's doing okay at the moment; no more discolouration or swelling. I'm taking him back to the reptile shop I bought him from on Thursday - there's a guy there who knows what he's talking about apparently. So hopefully I'll get a definate answer soon! I'll let y'all know what happens! :)

The picture is hard to tell BUT to me it looks like his right leg is in shed....is it possible that he shed part of his foot first so you're seeing new color beneath it??

I dont know if that made any sense or not.

Hello,

Great, let us know how things are going. I hope that the foot & toes are looking better. Just keep it clean as much as you can to ward off any infection that may be looming.
How is his appetite doing?

Sorry I hadn't replied! But I took him to see that specialist guy, he told me just to keep it clean and be aware that it could spread. So everything I already knew! lol.. He's doing fine though - no swelling or anything so hopefully will be fine! Thankyou for your advice!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
