why such high shipping rates for cardboard egg crates? Shipping should be 5 or 6 bucks tops, it can't weigh that much.

I think I need to call them, or they don't ship to Alaska... UGH!!! I'll have to see if I can find someone else here in town to split it with and use my alternate sources.

Or go to your local restaurant and ask nicely. I got 20 egg flats for free! (Ask right after breakfast though!!)

You can go into any grocery store in the afternoon-night and ask for huundreds of egg cartons. They'll give them to you with no trouble, especially costco or safeway. It's absolutely ridiculous to pay any money for them. These stores just put them out to recycle anyway, so it's no big deal to give them to you.

I wouldn't say it's absolutely ridiculous, to spend an hour going to a store asking for egg cartons when I can spend 25 bucks to buy them, it's definitely far more worth my time to purchase them. The time alone is more valuable than the money.

for $25 I can buy my kids enough groceries to make lunch for a week. For some people maybe it's no big deal to dump it on egg crate that's just going to get eaten and destroyed by bugs... but for others, stopping by a grocery store or restaurant and asking for egg crates isn't that big of an inconvenience to save some cash and help recycle!

I understand that for some people it may be worth the time to go to the grocery store, but to make the blanket statement that it's absolutely ridiculous to pay any money for them is just stupid. If I can stay at work for an extra hour and make $50 over going out of my way personally, and spending an hour going to a grocery store, asking for egg crates, getting them, etc. I end up LOSING $25 by spending that time XD. In my situation, it's absolutely ridiculous if I DON'T buy them online.

Not everyone makes $50 in an hour of work. And if you asked while you are at a grocery store, it wouldnt be any time at all and you would still be saving.

I never said it was ridiculous to pay for them, but the shipping price is a little steep. I have amazon prime so I really hate to pay shipping prices on anything.

No, but you were referring to my post which was responding to the person who did say that. For some reason people view their time as worthless.

Is it safe to reuse egg cartons?

Eggs are washed and sanitized before being packed in clean, brand new egg cartons, eliminating bacteria that may have been present on the egg shell. While the cartons and eggs are clean after they are processed, there is still the potential for the eggs and carton to become contaminated via cross-contamination, either at the store, during handling, and/or storage in the refrigerator at home. The Egg Safety Center would recommend discarding egg cartons in the trash and not reusing them.

I guess it just depends, doesn't it. I mean, there are several factors to consider. #1 safety. Cross contamination issues. Egg cartons from my home, that I know that I have had no cracks in the eggs etc, and knowing I have practiced safe food handling procedures I would likely re-use, and do. However I don't eat enough eggs on a weekly basis to keep my bugs in enough egg cartons.

Factor #2 At a restaurant I can almost guarantee you that the cooks do not CARE if they touch the egg cartons with the their hands that just touched bacon. They view it as a disposable piece of trash, and some lady wanting them at the end of the day each Saturday is not likely going to suddenly change their concern of getting any egg residue, or whatever residue on it. I'd like to keep my feeder tanks as clean as possible and avoid ANY issues that I might have. I have never had my feeders EAT my egg cartons, it could be that I never have put in cartons that had food residue (even ones you can't see) in their tanks and I make sure they have enough have high quality food and clean bins. You could tell me you have NEVER had an issue, but the one issue you MIGHT have, that wipes out your colony or give the bugs a parasitic or bacterial infection that makes my beardies or other reptiles sick that could have been prevented by a clean egg crate, well that to me is just worth it.

Factor #3 Gas prices being $4.69 a gallon and the distances I have to drive to get to local restaurants, Costco (we have one) and grocery stores, makes it probably just as cost effective to spend the $25.00.

Factor #4 Time, it is one thing I agree with kjinxx2. Weekends are spent with my family and I have three extremely busy teenagers. I'd much rather enjoy football games, tennis matches and volleyball matches, family brunches (at home) and dinners (at home) rather than run around to ask for quite possibly dirty bacteria harboring egg cartons. Weekdays are just as busy, between getting three kids to three different practices, their jobs and getting dinner and homework help done. My time is important.

Oh and $25.00 here buys a 2 lb block of cheese, a gallon of milk, loaf of bread, a small jar of peanut butter and about 4 apples. Heck 12 peaches costs $9.99! Hardly enough for a healthy decent lunch for any growing child. I am not rich by any means, but I ensure my kids have great meals that are healthy. Does my clean egg carton use mean I am a wasteful awful person, if you think so, you don't know me very well. It just means in this one instance I outweighed the pros and cons of using used and possibly contaminated egg crates and would prefer to use something brand new and clean.

Just because you have different priorities doesn't make your choice any better or worse. It's a personal decision. So what you may consider ridiculous, others might consider either time saving, healthier and a great value.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
