don't worry about highjacking....

also don't worry about disturbing the colony----they'll settle back down. i'm constantly looking at mine and they do settle. sounds like your set-up is fine-------where did you get your roaches from?

have you offered any veggies/fruit? you may want to lightly mist----dubia do like water===especially if they've just traveled a long way by mail. i'm just throwing all kinds of things out here. I've never had more than one dead at a time.

Don't worry about a thing. You always get a couple that drop dead after they are shipped. That's the reason we all ship overcounts. Roaches sometimes don't take the shipping well. But you shouldn't lose too many.

As for misting I always tell people it's a bad idea. Mainly because mold will sneak up on you where you won't notice it ie.the corners on the inside of your egg crates. It takes a while to form but if you mist I'll bet my bank roll you'll have mold issues sooner than later.

Be one w/ the roaches. Talk to them and hold them... LOL!

well, i've had my colony well over a year now and moved them from a rubbermaid into a large glass aquarium---so I can actually see them and mist the sides about every three days. No mold, no deaths----except for the occasional oldies. My colony is continually thriving.

i've also never had any accounts of deaths after receiving an order or after I've shipped out----

Here is a silly question for you... Are you sure that it was a dead one and not just their shed? The shed will look like a dead one. You need to pick it up and see if it is in fact a body (hard and dead) or a shed (just the outer skin).

From a business stand point I don't condone misting. I have well over 100 orders each week from the stores I deal w/ alone, with twice as many questions from them. The internet I'm just sort of dabbling in right now. Problem being is that what happens when you tell people that it's alright to mist? They soak down the whole enclosure including the egg crates and get mold. If I told people that they could mist everything except the egg crates, guess what they do? They mist down everything including the egg crates and when they get mold I'm the guy that they blame and then I have to replace orders. You are in the minority when it comes to the way you "think". You actually have some common sense and I would love all my customers to be as astute to details as you are, and believe me I'm not kidding! As long as you don't get those egg crates wet you should be in the clear. And if you haven't ever had any deaths during the "after shipping period" which would be about 2 weeks than again you are in the minority. Especially if you order roaches regularly. If this fact is true and your not embellishing than I may have to bring you to the casino as a good luck charm because unfortunately I'm not that lucky! hehehe :D

Never thought of this since I take roach keeping for granted. That's a great point Sam!

Thanks guys/girls! i added some oranges and carrots. picked up the body and it was a dead one. checked my temp and it was at 80 so i bumped up my heat pad to 4. I hope they start getting busy cause it looks like i'll be getting my new/first beardie next week some time! YEAH! i may just have to buy some to supplement until they thrive!

Thanks for all the help!

If you ever mist the sides of your enclosure just wait around and watch all the roaches gather to drink----specially the little ones. I also use water crystals and fruit high in moisture------my colony has exploded and I can't seem to ship out enough to keep it down. I have 7 tarantulas +an adult bearded dragon and still I have babies out the wazoooo.

I don't order roaches anymore because I got all I needed from three different sources well over a year ago. Never had any die after delivery----- I've been shipping out recently and so far no account of any of my roaches DOA or dying shortly after. I am diligent about checking for mold and so far.... nada.

Guess I am the roach queen minority-----woot~ :blob5: :blob8:

to each his/her own. ;)

not to hijack...

opened up my bin today to make sure there was enough cat food and cereal. I'm going to the store tomorrow for some viagra... um i mean oranges... lol anyway, i spotted a dead one right in the middle of the pile of food. this prompted me to "carefully" move my egg crates around a tad and there were a few dead ones. I didn't take them all out to count because i saw it said to leave them be. Just want to make sure that i'm not doing something wrong.

rubbermaid bin w/ cut hole on top/screened.
cat food/dry cereal although all the dry cereal (lucky charms lol) is gone!
water crystals... the pet store had cricket drink w/out calc, but they said it would work. jar said for crickets, spiders, etc...
egg crates stacked like IIIIII
heat pad under the egg crates
therm on the cool/food side says 85.

Thanks! ruby

Who's BoonBear and how does one get ahold of this person? I've not heard of him previously and am always looking for backup suppliers just in case.

THanks

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
