Im about to order some crickets because buying them at the store every other day is costing a fortune in fuel. I can order wax worms, butter worms, super worms, horn worms, silk worms and meal worms...

My dragon is approx 3mths old... he is 14in long.. sorry I don't know his weight... he eats easily 20-30 crickets a day as well as fruit and veg.

I can not get pheonix worms anywhere here... he LOVES meal worms but I am not giving them as I know they aren't the best for him...so of the list above which would you order and how many a week?

I`d say at his age crickets are probably still your best bet. wax worms and butter worms are always reserved as treat worms. Mine likes the butter worms slightly more but the wax worms are typically half the cost.

Horns and silks are much bigger, cost more, and cost to feed as they eat a specific pre-mixed chow, as opposed to other feeders. I like to give him maybe one of these a week, as I don`t keep their food and can pick up a horn for a dollar or a silk for 65 cents. They`re cheaper in bulks but for my treat purposes I don`t mind picking them up in singles. He nearly craps his pants when he sees these, it is like oh.. my.. god.. you are.. amazing.. chomp chomp chomp.

I like to feed supers to my 7 year adult, I find they digest easier than mealworms regardless of the size. Mealworms have a harder shell, but the shell issue aside I found its more the meat-to-shell ratio. Being that for them to get a decent portion of `meat` he only needs to eat so many, resulting in only so much shell consumed, as opposed to if I tried to attempt just mealworms he would eat so many more just to get a small amount of meat, and a high amount of shell consumed.

The mealies are cheap though so it is fun to mix in especially when they are bigger and can handle.

I`m at the point now though for bulk pricing I might just buy the supers, he seems to prefer them more regardless.

So sorry, I think I got off on a tangent. Depending on your region I hear roaches are a great alternative to crickets. Breeding would be your best bet at that point, dubias seem to be the popular choice, although discoids are up there(not sure of discoid size)

So to conclude I would probably continue with the crickets, just buy them bulk online. When he gets past 16 inches you could test out supers, only introduce them slowly into the diet and keep an eye on their stool for excessive amounts of shell. If you see large pieces of shell that means they had to pass it without actually digesting it.

Dont worry, with his size it sounds like you`re almost out of the `must be` crickets zone. Youre right that at this point it doesnt seem like the mealies make any sense, Im probably going to cut them out altogether myself.

Theres a local store by me that sells in bulk, its great on cost, but you might not be so lucky.. I would try searching for a local reptile exclusive shop. Pet store chains like petco and petsmart even my nearest big als aquarium chain likes to rip people off for feeders. Seeing this kid at the register once talking about how he didnt know how he could keep buying cups of these things like daily(per the feeding requirements of a baby) and just thinking to myself there is a much better way.

Thanks for your response. I am in Ontario Canada.. roaches are hard to come by and quite frankly having roaches in my house just kind of creeps me out. I order crickets from portcreditpets online... at almost 30.00 with shipping for 500...I figure I save almost 40.00 plus the cost of fuel to drive half hr for the nearest pet store that sells crickets... I just found someone in the area that has superworms.. he is still too small for them but I may get 100 off of them and let them go and breed and by the time he is ready that group will be ready as well and that will also cut down the costs... it will be months away if I am reading the article on this board properly.. he'll probably be burmating.lol.. but my step son also has a bd who is older.... so I will be able to supply him as well.... I haven't quite decided if i want to do it... it seems easy enough but also seems a little overwhelming at the same time.

Ahh, yeah I'm in ontario also, funny enough, so I feel your pain on the roaches. Somebody came into the store yesterday talking about the discoids he breeds, I might look into it myself down the line.

www.supercricket.ca has decent prices, and recorpinc.com can meet you near the tims/cdn tire near their location to dodge the shipping cost.

I go to Tails and Scales, I keep meaning to write down the entire breakdown of their costs but I can tell you they have been the best cost option by far for me as every where else I've been (Petsmart/Big Al's) Only sells by cups, or you can buy from the petsmart cricket bin that has a flat rate 10c(small) or 11c(medium/large) which, when you do the math, is like highway robbery in comparison to bulk buying. Plus I'm not going to buy smalls and I don't like the noise of larges, so I like that tails sells the crickets in three size choices.

If you take the ttc its so easy to get there, and I actually dodge the fare of going back. I just get on the 41(to keele station) to get home from work, get off at dundas west, then after I'm done at the store, I use the same transfer to get on the 40, that goes to dundas west station, then subway it back home. Costs me zero dollars to get there after work, as I'd be paying a token to get home from work regardless.

I'll be there this friday if you need a complete price breakdown, or you can email them. They have a chart on their wall I keep meaning to write down.

LOL you lost me at ttc. I live near Belleville. 1.5hrs from Toronto. So I am stuck with having them shipped in. However, the breeder I got my boy from told me today he is going to attempt to breed crickets so I am hoping that works out.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
