I know winters a bit away but I like to plan ahead. I'm curious what people in cold climates do for feeders during the winter short of breeding feeders yourself. I assumed I will buy in bulk I have a set up for a large rubbermade tub for crickets but I dont think it would be enough to last a whole winter. I see most companies wont ship if temps are x amount high or lower than x amount. Do you suck it up and pay local pet store prices until you can get shipments again or will online companies ship with warmpacks (or is that even viable)?

Thanks

Last winter we sucked it up and went to the pet stores..but even there. It was slim pickings....and the bugs were ughggh.

This year we are breeding supers and hornworms....roaches IF I can talk my hubby into them :)

Btw...I like that you plan ahead...because I'm not a great planner....and seeing your posts prompts me to get it together..lol!

If your dragon is big enough, go with superworms. Last year around September/October I bought about 1000 superworms and they kept my dragon fed until January/February (I don't remember exactly, I just know I bought those worms and didn't have to buy feeders all winter). They're very easy to take care of, and they live for months and months.

I had the same issue last year and ordered from Linda during the winter and didn't have any issues getting stuff from her and she didn't charge extra for packs like other places I saw. If you start now you should be ok breeding supers. It's easy just takes some time to get them going. Roaches I also did. they don't cost much to keep going and eat a lot of different veggies which is nice for gut loading. I don't see crickets being good for over winter just because the fact they don't last long at all. I've had supers last me all but a year (never had them die from old age actually they just ran out) Roaches same way.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
