WILL IT BREAK?? Heavy Basking Rock in a 50g Glass Tank

I need to know if I put a 46.8 pound basking/climbing rock in my glass tank if it will crack or break the glass bottom? I get that I would need to be extra careful when placing it in and out, but would it break just by pure pressure?

You are joking right? This 46.8 pound rock can it even fit in the tank? All I know is i wouldn't even try it...But if this rock can fit and you are really set on having it, Call the manufacturer of the tank they might be able to help you

If you are dead set on having it maybe put in a a piece of tile..... spread out the weight of the rock.

50 gallons of water weighs over 400 pounds. I don't think a rock is going to break your tank :wink:

the 400 lbs of water is evenally distributed through the tank and no on a certain area.

^I'm in no mood for math, but a 50g tank has about 5 sq.ft of floorspace. 400 pounds evenly distributed over 5sq.ft works out to 80 pounds per sq. ft. We don't know what the rock looks like but I assume it's safe. I'm no mathematician either, so if I'm wrong you can correct me but that was how I came to my conclusion.

I also never said you were wrong, tile is obviously what this thing should sit on.

It is actually closer to 600lbs filled http://freshaquarium.about.com/od/aquariumsandstands/a/tanksizesweights.htm. So the rock will be just fine if you sit it on tile. :wink:

I still would not do it, Its not worth the risk...This 46 pound rock odds are its gonna be tall and probably really close to his basking light and the rock could burn him right? Can you measure this rock and post a photo so we can get a better idea what you are working with

I would like to add here one rough spot on the bottom of the rock could easily crack the glass, and btw all glass can handle weight differently...Call the manufacturer they should be able to give you an answer its your money tho...

Thank you for taking the time to reply I don't have to have it, but I have another one way smaller in the tank and its the only thing she likes being on and best of all its free. I haven't bleached it up or anything yet, but I took some pictures for you guys. The smaller one doesn't even get within 12" of her uvb light nor high enough to get the best heat... She has other things that do, but since she got the small rock that is exactly the same as the big one she has been in love lol. She actually bearded up to me for the first time when I tried to move it. lol It was cute and funny.

So the rock is like 15" tall that gives you around 4-5" to top of the tank right? IMO that's not a good idea for one that's to close to lighting...And if you are not using a screen your dragon will jump outta that tank in no time....I would lay something under the rock and lay it flat if it fits...And if not hammer to rock :wink:

I would be concerned since these tanks are for reptiles and not fish, that the glass may not hold the same weight. I think calling the manufacturer is a good idea.
