Understandable question. No culling is not an accepted practice for mainly two reasons, first beardies are generally so adaptable that they can thrive without much effort even without limbs, eyes, etc. When I say thrive I dont mean survive but actually live a very full and normal life. The second reason is because beardies IMO are different then many other breed of reptile in that they seek human interaction and attention so it is just way too difficult for most to do this as the behaviors they exhibit are just to affectionate to not get attached especially when so many hobbyists out there will happily adopt them and bring them into their family. It would be like culling puppies, does that make sense?I dont know how else to explain it.

I have to say im so glad they dont cull or we wouldnt have our Roo (badly kinked tail) Lexia(3 legs that work and 1 that she drags it was a birth defect) We had a breeder from this site ship them both to us at 5 1/2 weeks of age. They were both so fat and happy and are now just under 10 months and thriving. Yes they are smaller and not perfect but thats why we love them :D Lexia with her 3 legs that girl just about kills her self jumping around her viv and shes so darn fast when she runs across the floor. I think she has all our nondefect beardies beat!

Just the though of culling just gives me the shivers....

Culling to me would only be acceptable practice if you had a baby with neurological issues or sick or just internally not functioning...only if they are suffering and it's obvious that they won't make it....but not for abnormalities or deformities if they are not life threatening. There are many different kinds of animals that adapt to being different than they were suppose to be.

Many thought that I should have put Zak-n-Wheezie down but as you can tell they have adapted quite well to their condition.

As a breeder the only time I would even think about culling is if there was a SEVERE deformity right from the egg. And I mean it would have to be severe.

I couldn't do it . . . it is not up to me what lives and dies. I would do everything in my power to make sure the baby survives though.

I think Tom said the key word SEVERE as in not saveable. Everything deserves the chance to live but nothing deserves to suffering.

In that case I would have to have my husbands help . . . I can't even freeze the pinkie mice for the snakes.

boy I feel heartless....

I used to breed fish and its a common practice. Even if a fish isn't the color morph you were looking for... It could become fish food or the humane way to end fish suffering was the freezer

I guess I feel a puppy with "born" with only two legs probably should be culled....

I'm not here to judge and I understand they will/can adapt... But if they were in the wild its very unlikely they'd have the chance...

either way bravo to you that have it in your heart to care for the special ones...

and for those who get rid of them I'm sure make it clear not to be used as breeders....

So if you feel a puppy born with only 2 legs should be put down then you too would have thought
that these guys should have been put down as well?

But yes you are correct in the wild they would not have stood a chance.

i love that picture Barbara. And beardies are such great animlas at adapting to their disability. I have a baby albino boa with no eyes. He is an absolute sweetheart! He misses sometimes when im feeding him (i feed f/t) but eventually he gets the food. I personally dont believe in culling. If you get an animal you dont desire, someone will want it!

To me it would be too much like asking "why do we let deformed babies live?" I don't think we have a right to determine who should and shouldn't have a chance to live. Only nature should decide not stupid humans.

I'm sad just thinking about putting a beardie down because it's slightly deformed or not the color you were wanting  People really kill pets that weren't born the right color?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
