I have always had as many animals as I could manage. As a kid I had dogs, cats, parakeets, anoles, geckos, various fish, horses, hermit crabs...basically anything that wasn't a rodent, my parents let me keep. When I went to college, it was my first time on my own without a pet. I had to leave my dog and my cat with my parents, and I was really lonely. My second year of school it got worse, so I got a baby corn snake from the pet store. I really wanted rats, but didn't know how to deal with the smell and their space requirements. I figured corn snakes were low maintenance, odorless, didn't need to be handled or played with if I didn't have time and only needed to eat once a week. King Crimson has been a joy; he is gentle, patient, is happy to have kids handle him and happy to be left alone too. A year and a half later I added a ball python. I'm not in love with BPs the way I am with King Crimson, but Atlas is happy and well cared for. The snakes are wonderful, but they aren't really companion animals. Charlie is much more social and interactive, but he does need a lot more care in terms of diet and lighting than say a cat. But he is cute, and totally worth it.
