Which thermometer to believe?

I have a zoomed digital infrared thermometer and a zoomed digital thermometer with a probe. So I have the probe in my roach bin and it reads anywhere from 81-87 which is about 1/4 from the bottom of the egg crate. Right now it's reading 85 with the probe but when I check with my infrared it says 78 in the spot of the probe...and 97 on the floor... So which one do I believe? Do I have a faulty infrared or a faulty probe?

You can test the accuracy of the probe by getting a cup/bowl of ice water and placing the probe in it. Give it around half an hour to get an accurate reading (you should be letting your probe sit for half an hour in any place that your trying to get a reading from).

Although im not sure if you can test the accuracy of an infrared this way, but i'd assume you could.

you could get temp guns for less then 20 bucks. ive seen them for even around 14 on amazon i believe

Doesn't mean they are more accurate than any other thermometer. I've got a nice temp gun I bought from amazon, and a large range of different digitals and the readings are all over the place. No 2 thermometers even come close to reading the same temps.

Brandon gave you the best advice, get a bowl of water and put ice in it, constantly stirring it until you get a reading. The reading should be exactly 32 degrees.
