where to buy styrofoam

just wondering where you guys buy your styrofoam at for the fake rocks, i am looking to get a big piece of the really thin kind to make just a background, i have made one fake rock and i got the styrofoam at michaels, but it was pretty thick and not the normal white styrofoam that i think of, and it was quite expensive

You didn't mention where you were from, but Lowes or HomeDepot will carry it. Look in the section with the insulation.

also i have herd of people asking like bestbuy and radio shak if they have any foam they have thrown away and usually they do ... never done it but its just a suggestion good luck and what ever you make show some pics k?

I got mine at Hobby Lobby or just a general craft store. Get the sculpting quality. Then piece individual pieces together so it looks random and natural.

if youre making big things or multiple...the cheapest way to go was lowes *for me* 25 bucks for a sheet of styrofoam that was 4ft X 8ft

holy crap thats some hardcore styro :shock: i just use the cheap white 1/2 or 3/4 inch stuff. 4x8 sheet is between 4-6 bucks.

Yeah I went to home depot and got a 4x8 1" sheet for 7.50

finished the background and put it in about 20 mins ago. words of advice, never build something so custom and time consuming without test fitting first, i just used my measurements that i took before and did it all at my moms house bc i was there for thanksgiving, kind of a pain in the butt, but its done now and looks pretty good, what do you guys think?

this is the basic inspiration behind the brick design ( my moms brick fireplace)

you already seemed to be done... i might of the found the directions on this site.. but i built my own cage for my son.. as i had an aquarium when i first bought the 2 babys for my sons birthday.. but for anyone else..

home depot sells a 8 foot by 4 foot just like plywood and get the the thicker one. but if you just go on trash day its not hard to find styrofoam in the neighborhood trash... that was easiest place.. or go look in the dumpster of some stores and you can find also.

but i just would just look on trash day when i took my kids to school.. there LCD TV etc,.. there is a lot foam as some are already shaped in some cool ways..

the home depot cost about 10 bucks if i remember... the CANNED FOAM is also a great. as i experimented with many different setups and glues etc..

electric foam cutter.. was a waste of time...

go on trash day and you can find foam for free or business dumpsters. also there was lot of new construction going on and that was a great place for foam.. as on most of the houses now all architecture is just foam pieces covered with stucco.. i actually have some big pillars still as they were cracked and they tossed them in the trash..

free always the best..
