When did you begin to socilize?

My Bonnie is 12 1/2 inches long and 5 1/2 months old.

My question is, at what point did you start to socialize your beardy?

For instance, when did you first start letting them run around on floor? When did you start having them spend more out-of-the-cage time than in-the-cage? Do you feed them outside their viv, etc.?

I don't have the money for two bearded dragons, so she is stuck with 3 people in a house and a black cat to socialize with. The cat gets WAY too curious, so he often isn't allowed within a few feet of her.

Comments? Stories?

I let my beardies roam and explore the day I got them.. I am right there supervising and watching their every move until I feel comfortable and trust them not to attempt any big jumps, or get in to any spaces I can't get them out of. When I am able to trust them, I keep my eye on them and always know where they're at, but allow them some more freedom to roam a bit.. After a while they all seem to have their favorite spots, and usually once they find a good spot they curl up and go to sleep. Three of my beardies will beg to come out and if they want to explore and run around they will squirm the second I pick them up, but usually they want to hang on me and be with me while I'm doing whatever it is I am doing. Basically once you get to know their personality you'll be able to trust and predict what they're going to do while they are roaming. I think your beardie is plenty old enough for a closely supervised romp around the house.

Mine is about 7 months and almost 17 inches, I let him run around the house while I follow him. He tastes everything. I also put a harness on him and take him outside as much as possible.

I'm looking forward to when we can take her out on harness, that's for sure. We have some very nice public parks near here.

Thanks for the responses :D

Well, I've been taking mine out since I got them (letting them settle down first, of course), but I try to handle them quite often. As for the cat, I've seen many pics of cats cuddling with beardies, it's so cute!

I held my Nim 5 days after I got him. I made an adorable floss harness because he was so tiny. And the first time out was only 10 minutes long. He was 1 month old and 6 inches back then. Now I take him out for well extended periods of time. Without a harness even, I fully trust him. I think the longest he's been out was an hour. Of course it's so cold now that he gets cold after 30 minutes of out time. Yet, surprisingly, he still wants to stay out. So then we snuggle. Since I had Nim out with me when he was 1 month, your beardie is well past the age of out time. Well, in my mind. :D

It's fine that you only have one beardie. :) It's really just a personal preference if you want more.
My husband and I have 3 beardies, and we pretty much let them out of their vivs a few days after we got them. We only do 1 on 1 with them, though, because we have 2 males and one female. The males definitely do not like each other and they go crazy when they see the female. We let them run around the living room but they are always supervised. We have guinea pigs and sometimes they are curious about them and will try to go over to the gp cage to look at them. After some running around they actually like to go in the nook of our TV stand where our gaming consoles are and go to sleep. We think they like the warmth there. So it's the official beardie hang out. lol

My brother and I for the summers just let Spike and Ruby freeroam the WHOLE day. They would sleep outside; we knew their favorite hidings spots, and we would wake them up and then feed them. At around 10:00 in the morning we would bring them outside and let them bask for around 1 hr, with supervision. They would poop and we would bring them in and then let them freeroam the whole day. They are very tame and we take them to church, Hobby Lobby, King Soopers, wherever we go. Many people have stopped us, asking: "Doesn't he jump off?" we reply 'he's very tame' 8) and then they're wowed. :D Spike and Ruby have "Socialized" with my brother and I since... they were 3 weeks old; the day we got them. 8)

O wow ...

Well, when we let her out, she always runs for the litter box! ...Not sure what that is about :/

Mostly she sits on our laptops and keeps super warm before suddenly running up our arms and trying to jump off the chair. She's getting much better about being picked up and removed from her cage.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
