since the passing of my beardie Draco, i didnt feel like looking after any animal of any kind but now i have the urge to start caring for beardies again!
looking after bearded dragons is somewhat of a lifestyle that cannot be changed. So ive decided to get a couple of new beardies and was wondering what kind of subtrate or ground base wpuld be best to use as i want them to be the happiest they can be.

thanks,
ben

Slate tiles, non-adhesive shelf liner, repti carpet or paper towels. I would stay away from partical substrates such as sand, crushed walnut shell and others

Hello Ben,

So sorry about Draco...but glad to hear you're getting another beardie or two.

I myself prefer slate tile. It's easy to clean, keeps their nails filed, doesn't harbor bacteria and it looks nice.

Good luck getting your new beardie(s),

Dawn :D

Slate and certain ceramic tiles are great, and generally make cleaning very easy. The downside is when they crap in a crease and it goes down (especially runny poops!), then you have to pull everything out. I'm debating siliconing tiles into my monitors tank, that way I don't have to worry about the poop issues.

There is another thing you can do that works well. One beardie cage I had cut this piece of plywood to the size of the floor then cut that in half. Put 3 coats of clear coat on the plywood. Then I put some primer then a spraypaint that has a rough rock texture to it. Sprayed that on. Uses more then one color of rock paint to make a sort of rough slate like appearance. Then I put 8 coats of clear coat on the top of the paint. It was very durable and lasts for a long time. Also it may not seem like it but it is easy to clean. If he poops on one side take that board out go to the sink and wash it. Then put it back in all clean.

i use aspen wood shavings cus thay wont cause impaction its digestable and passes thew the beardies system pritty easy .......repti carpet or a flat hard surface is the best way to go but cus theres no substrate to absorb the mess the smell can be overwhelming and u loose the option to scoop it out i personaly dont have the tummy for it pine and cedar are commonly sold as bedding for numerous animals but thay can be harmful aspen is 100% safe

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
