??? Water Crystals Fail

So I bought 8oz of water crystals for my roaches, figuring it would be cost effective to just make my own rather than buying the $6 small container from the pet store. Followed the directions which were to mix 1 teaspoon with 1 cup of water, wait an hour and then drain the excess water. I did that, but instead of crystals, I have an inch of slime at the bottom of my container. It's all one big sheet of goo. What did I do wrong?

You got the wrong thing. Make sure the bag says large water crystals. I get mine at lowes and it is right next to like roses food and miracle gro.

It turns out my batch was defective :/ They refunded me and I got the miracle gro stuff from walmart. It works great!
