Hello,
I've been here and there on this site for about 3 weeks now; you may have seen a few posts from me lately. I wanted to post a quick summary of why I'm here. We have 4 children and one of the four is an animal lover through and through. He has always wanted a lizard for a pet (he is 4 now), but there was no way on earth mom was going to let that happen, though dad was a little more open to the prospect.

Anyway, this same son was born a thumb sucker, if you have ever had one or where one you understand the situation. It was a constant and consistent habit that was only broken up throughout the day by the occasional need to say a few words or dig more furiously in the dirt. So, during his dental checkup this year (about 4 months ago) I spoke to the dentist about this habit and different ways that we could help him break it--we had never given him any trouble about the habit, we didn't want it to be a fight. The dentist mentioned that he had an array of appliances that he could insert that would make thumb-sucking impossible or even painful, but he said that the only way to kick the habit 100% was to have the child do it on their own. He said to sit down with him and discuss the habit (our son had told us on occasion that he wanted to stop) and to make a goal not to suck his thumb for 30 days straight and that at the end of the 30 days he would receive a reward for his success. Well you can see where this is going, we tried a few different rewards, but they were never "big enough" to make it worth it to him, then one day, he said that he really really wanted a pet Lizard and to that my wife shocked us all and said that he could if he stopped sucking his thumb--he hasn't sucked his thumb since that very moment >1 month ago. Enters Rainy.

Now, you are all thinking, crap, not another parent appeasing their kid with a pet that won't get the attention it needs and deserves meant for a kid who hasn't even entered the public school system. Well, that isn't how this story continues, we love our Rainy and I'm committed to having her be a part of our live until this boy is driving or as long as she can be expected to live and fulfill a full lizardy life.

The 3 boys decided that they would name her so her full name is, get ready, Rainbow Rocky LWizard (the 2 year old got to pick the last name and so it is phonetically LWizard). We call her Rainy for short and as you can tell we think or rather Hope that she is a girl, but will be fully prepared for a boy when she is old enough to let us know.

I would like to thank everyone in this community for your help and concern for our little scaley family members; I'm excited to be an active part of the life here at beardeddragon.org. And now for the pics (sorry they are a bit out of focus):

She's a cutie!

Sounds like how my parents bribed me to stop sucking my thumb. I did it until I was in 2nd grade. My parents tried everything, even put hot crushed red pepper on my thumbs. It wasn't until I was told I could get my ears pierced that I stopped.

Oh and I don't eat anything spicey now either - go figure

Thanks.

Yeah, we're pretty proud of him. Breaking a habit is tough business! I guess it just takes the right motivation, like Lsorrent said.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
