Just a minor redecoration of my male dragons enclosure. Its a bit lush looking for an arid species, but he likes climbing on the plants :). He also likes laying on that ugly orange towel, so I let him keep it.

Thanks for the feedback!, Yes we made the hammock, well actually my boyfriend made the hammock. We reused the screening from our cricket delivery and some driftwood we found at one of the local beaches. Your babies are beautiful. We have one other handi-capable bearded, Onyx, who is also missing part of a foot, like your Gabby. Onyx seems to have a love for inclines, as you will find him/her (we're leaning towards her) sleeping vertically or on her bridge. Thanks again!

Your welcome!

I thought I would share what we have for now. We got Lincoln from a family who said they didn't have time for him anymore. We had to make a decision quick if we wanted him. Perfect timing since we are moving across the country!!
Here is the picture that was texted to me before we got him:
photo-14-1.jpg

He was in walnut shell substrate, with old shed, feces, bits of food, dried up meal worms, and a dusty mess; as you can see, it was gross! :puke: Since we are moving we really can not give him a bigger tank quite yet, but the project is going to start as soon as we get there. My husband looks at him everyday and say "he really does need a bigger tank", "we will build him the 'best' one" ect. :love5:
Here is what we have now:

Its much better than what he had. New repti sun 10.0 bulb, live food and a huge bowl of yummy greens everyday, which he eats every bit of. We handle him a lot, and give him baths every other day. Opposed to the old UVB bulb, dry food, live food once a week or less, and a bath sometimes. So he is definitely spoiled, he just need a bigger viv. I love this thread we are getting such great ideas and when we are finished with our project I will post tons of picture for sure!

Nice viv, of course, I'm a little bias because I have the same brand vivs for my 7 beardies. Nice looking boy you have there too!

I am going to start the build of one of these this weekend. I have checked out most of them in this forum and have a few questions. I have only had my bearded dragon for 5 days so bare with me please.

1. Why do some of you have the lights inside the Viv?

2. How big should it be? I have all the materials to make it 4x2x4 and have a 2nd story so to speak is this necessary?

3. For those of you who have already built one what should I be looking at for lamps etc...

I am sure I will have more as it goes on.

Thanks in advance for you help.

1) Because the screens and lids on these tanks and what not actually act as a filter for the light. If the person has their lights sitting outside of the viv/tank, especially the UVB lights then they are keeping their dragons from getting the complete benefits that they could. (Not to mention it makes it a lot easier to maintain the desired distances when the lights are inside as well)

2) 4X2X4 is way too big but that is your own prerogative. As babies they only need 20gal enclosures and 40 as adults. The typical 36X16X18 (called a 40gal breeder) is absolutely perfect in every way for anyone who has ever used one. The 4X2X2s are nice but are massive. Anything other than full sized adults in there is just a wash. Most don't realize how large those dimensions are until they actually build them and I just did 4 of them and got a kick out of the idea I was almost considering making them any bigger..

3) Try and find a 36" single light enclosure for your UVB light (can be pricey at times.. dual 48"s are normally the cheapest and can be modified.) I chose to do twin 48s and then cut them in half and it came out awesome.) Apart from that you can also grab some dual out door flood light fixtures at HD and stop by and grab a flood light buld to go in there. One side can be used for the heat bulb (flood bulb) and the other can be used during the winter for a CHE (ceramic heat emitter) if additional heat is needed. My vivs are extremely bright, I couldn't imagine getting any other lights in there but some do and I'm being blinded on the side of my face from my viv stack right now and just don't see how or why. The beardies eyes can't enjoy that...

People may argue but my breeder said 11 inches is okay for a larger Viv. If you see stress marks put him back in smaller tank and ease him into the new one over time.

Spike is a rescue and is a year old. He is 11 inches from head to tail.

Its too big.

There is no reason for us to really have 2ft tall enclosures other than the fact we as humans think its prettier to make multiple levels. They are land desert animals, they don't need 3 levels to climb upto but most perceive that with a "cool" look so its become common to see. 4 ft tall would be over kill but if you want one that big then understand that your dragon will be forced to climb up 3+ft just to get to his basking area which is asking a lot..

Sounds like I need to scale things down a little and maybe do some more research before I dive in. I have him in a 20 gal breeder now. I have a 40 gal but I am waiting on a top then I will put him in it. I have adequate lodgings for him now so I have plenty of time to build the right viv.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
