I only have one beardie, a 4yo female named Pheeny, 18" long and 530g. She has been a fairly healthy girl and gotten regular checkups with a great reptile vet. He recently left the office and is starting a new practice at the end of September. Wouldn't you know this is when Pheeny would decide to get sick?
Her care and setup: 40 gallon tank, slate tile substrate, MegaRay 100w MVB bulb, basking temps around 100, gutloaded/dusted superworms (3-4 per day), collard greens as staple veg, plus occasional carrots, apples, beans, etc. Warm baths every other day.
Last Wednesday (five days ago) she suddenly stopped eating. Now, she has had periods where she slows down in eating before but they are always accompanied by less movement and thus less pooping. Well, this time she stopped eating, grew lethargic BUT on Thursday started pooping 3-5 times a day. This continued on Friday. On Saturday, she was lifting her tail and trying to poop multiple times a day but each one was very small. I began to give her Flukers Repti-Aid on Saturday to keep her hydrated. I have also been giving her daily warm baths but she does not drink at all in them.
I emailed my regular vet who advised me to take her to another reptile vet (an hour away) today since he does not currently have an office to see patients. I took her in this morning with a fresh, although small, stool sample. The stool sample came back negative/clear. The vet did an x-ray to make sure there were no obstructions or eggs, and that was clear. She was given an injection of fluids for hydration and Vitamin B to stimulate appetite.
The vet said that since coccidia is such a common problem in reptiles, she would treat for it despite the negative fecal sample. She gave me:
Panacur Liquid (give 0.7mL daily for five days, then repeat in two weeks)
Albon Oral (give 0.5mL daily for five days, then once every two days for one month)
My concern is that these medicines could make her loose stools and poor appetite even worse and may not even be needed, since she didn't show any coccidia in her stools. I would really appreciate any feedback about if I should give Pheeny these meds or not.
For now, I am continuing the warm baths and Repti-Aid. Thank you!
