Very Upset!

I'm thoroughly upset, and have to vent and get your opinions on this.

Someone just told me that reptiles are incapable of love, and other human emotions. They said that anyone who believes this is 'sadly misguided' and that all these ideas of reptiles feeling love come from Disney movies.

I'm sorry to say but I agree, reptile don't feel love. If a beardie is capably of love, can you image what a lonely life they would live in the wild?

This is a good argument that I can't seem to come to terms with on either side of the fence. In a way, I do see how if they did "love" and feel emotion, they would have a very lonely life out in the wild and wouldn't thrive. But, they are also domesticated now, just like the dog and cat. If you were to meet a fully feral cat, chances are its not going to come up rubbing all over you; I image it'd be the same with a wild beardie. But I do know that my Pablo snuggles up with me on my neck, comes running up my arm when I go to get him out of his tank, and is very content being near me without even attempting to running away; where as when hes with other people he will run or puff up at them. So who knows if they truly do love or not, but I would have to argue that they do surely recognize certain people and become attached to them. Regardless if Pablo loves me or not, I'm still going to give him mine

this is a very interesting argument that I struggle with alot! Like the above poster.. MJ snuggles up wtih me EVERY NIGHT in my bed and cannot sleep anywher else.. she climbs up to my neck and shoulder any chance she gets. Does she love me ? I dont know. In my mind and my heart, offcourse I believe that she loves me. But whether MJ loves me back (reality) or not, I personally don't care as no matter what I love her to death and she is my daughter! ...err... my baby.. err.. i mean.. lizard ! lol. She's the love of my life no matter if can feel love or not.

Oh yes, I do believe they recognize "their" people and know that we are who provides food and warmth. Feeling comfortable and safe is different then love though.
I don't agree they are domesticated though, they haven't been in captivity that long and still operate on hard wired instincts.
I'm not quite sure what to say about the feral cat compression, I don't see cats as loving creatures either, more are users really who only tolerate us.

I absolutely believe a Beardie Loves. Ok, as far as all "reptiles", I don;t know- I have had turtles, and I think they loved me. I have Falkor, and I think she loves me. There is no way to know what an animal is feeling, but just like anything else- if a dog, cat or even a baby human can cuddle w/ you and wants to be near you- that's some sort of love, isn't it?I know for a fact- all my babies (kitties and beardie) love me, and I don't care what anyone says!!!

Can they love, i dont really think it matters, what matters to me is they are one of the only things beside my human kids that bring me true joy. Lately my world is completley falling apart thanks to this screwd up economy i find my husband and I having to start all over again do to his being laid off, but no matter what bill collector or hypicritical family member has ticked us off in a day we can always lay in bed with the two kids and seven beardies and everything is ok. we forget all the sadness and hate and enjoy the love our scalies bring.

Personally i believe that if you have a soul you have the ability to love.. and connect to another creature with a soul.. emotion is a basic feeling we all have no matter what species we are..it is an energy connection we have with everything else on our earth.

OMG... 7 Beardies? You are truely an AMAZING person! I have my Falkor and while I love him to pieces, I can't imagine how much work and money it takes to care for 7 beardies... But that really is awsome. And I agree, my beardie is awsome, and always makes everything seem ok!
