UVB light

Hey guys,

My husband just got done building a 4 tier cage. The deminsions are 39w x 18h x 24d. We have a 36' reptisun 10.0 that spans the back of the cage, and a heat light on the right side. I am using a 75w spot light for heat. My question is the reptisuns seem to run hot. We can turn off the heat lamp and the temps will get to 94 with just the repti sun on! Not good as there is no temp gradient. We are currenlty using a T12 to house the uvb. Will a T8 make that much of a difference? We are going to put more venting in to help too, but I am worried we have spent all this money and time and not be able to use this beautiful cage. :shock:

Ventilation is very important, maybe you can add some vents?

We are working on the venting. We thought that the vents in the back would be enough, but have realized that we need to add more on the sides of the cage. We will be adding them this weekend.

I wonder how to work it during the summer when it is hot outside. How does everyone ensure they have a cool side when it is summer? Do people turn off their basking lights during the peak of the day?

Well, our house is about the same temp in the summer and winter, so controlling the temps in our herp cages doens't seem to be an issue. I know some houses aren't quite as efficient as my apartment, so I guess a lower wattage bulb or maybe adjustable vents would be a good idea.

We can have up to a 20 degree difference. Plus will all the reptile lighting I am sure it will go up even higher. I am hoping the venting will help and I will get different wattage lights. I told my husband they need mini celling fans

You know, that reminds me of something my SO showed me one time when he was looking at plans to build enclosures. We saw some pictures of an enclosure that used electronic fans. You know the black ones that go inside computers. You can get them in all different sizes. This could help with ventilation and temperature control.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I just have no clue where to get one! I will have to check out Wal Mart. I am sure they will have something that would do the trick. I also read somewhere that you need it to suck the air out not blow in because you will just be blowing the air around making the entire environment warm or cool. Oh this is all so confusing. I wonder if you can you just mount the fan on backward to suck the air out.
