UVB: Hood on top or strip inside?

I have read the sticky at the top of this forum thread but I would like more personal opinions on why people mount their UVBs like they do.

Is it better to mount them using the strip fixture INSIDE the tank, or can it be ontop with a hood and be just fine?


I think I might switch from my zilla hood to a 24'' strip with one of those new Reptisun 10.0 UVB HOs.


Is there even any difference from outside mounting to inside? I visually can not see the difference, the tank looks just as bright when it is on top and when it is inside, I'm using a 10.0 reptisun uvb. Will UVB rays penetrate the mesh wire of a Zill Critter Cage?

We mount them inside the tank because placing the bulb on top of the screen filters out nearly 50% of the uvb output. And in addition, it makes it easier to get the recommended 6-8 inch distance from the basking spot.

Is an 18'' 10.0 UVB good enough for a 40gallon tank? If mounted inside?
