UTH help for cricket tank

I've finally got my beardie's tank setup just right. Now I need to set up the tank I have for crickets. I have a 55 gallon tank that I want to put a UTH under. The tank is split in half by a wooden board that I have put silicone caulk around. This will allow me to use one side while I clean the other side. Right now it's elevated on 2 x 2's. Is that enough room for the UTH to not catch carpet on fire? What's the best substrate to use with a UTH?

That sounds like a good setup. Propped up on 2x2 should be plenty of clearance for the UTH. Just need a bit of airflow under the tank and the UTH will just feel slightly warm. I used wood shavings as substrate (the kind you get for a hamster) and it made it easy to clean and helped keep the smell reasonable.
