OK so I was kind of shopping around for beardie breeders and I emailed this one just asking about prices and he told me he had some available and I told him that I wasn’t ready to take one in yet because I didn’t have a viv or set up yet and he replied If you buy the viv stuff first, you will likely get the wrong set up and either he will not eat well and/or will not stay brightly colored. We provide a Shopping List (once an order is placed) with only what you need and what has been proven in studies to keep the juveniles eating and bright. I was just wondering if this was a normal response. I wanted everything to be all set before my beardie gets here but he’s telling me to wait.

When I got Wave, her breeder seemed VERY interested/encouraging of my having a viv already set up - I sent her pictures so she could see it and offer advice. We also discussed beforehand what feeders Wave liked, so I could go ahead and have those on-hand and well-fed. I don't know if that's the norm, but what you're being told is certainly different from my experience. Most beardies in a new home seem to have at least some relocation stress - but it also makes sense to me that things would wind up less stressful in the long run if you're not running around and adding/taking away from their new home from the first day they're in it! That advice would make me uncomfortable, personally. Why can't he go ahead and send you this list, then let you set everything up and he can give you a critique? What's so special about his list that he needs to keep it private until a purchase is made? Many breeders have them right there on a website, for all the world to see!

Thats how i was feeling too. Its like this guy wants me to do everything that he wants. i was also reading his website and he uses Repti-Sand from Zoo Med as the substrate for juveniles but i was told that sand is not good. i think i might keep looking. where did you get Wave?

There is no reason to wait to buy a set up, but I can think of quite a few for shopping ahead. Many breeders will provide a shopping list and a care guide, they don't make you buy the animal first. In fact if you look on many reputable breeder sites, they'll have on there. There are reptile breeders who won't even sell to you if you don't have a viv ready.

It's actually considered part of good ownership to get the set up ready before you get any reptile. It takes a while to get temps everything just right. It's not something you can put together in a few minutes and be done with it. It can take days, a week, or longer to get it together. If you already have the dragon first, than your animal would be going without essentials until you figure it out, or even potentially harmed by it. (what works for one person can make dangerously high temps for another, it's not an exact science). The animal will be stressed when you get it, and every single change will stress it out even more, even if the change is for their own good.

where did you get Wave?

From Yellow Room Reptiles. And I cannot recommend them highly enough - the initial experience and follow-up have been spectacular. They now sell with Rio Reptiles at beardeddragon.co. Have a look!

I don't have a beardie yet...but...this guy doesn't seem like a good breeder. Once the seller starts to pressure you to buy something, run away as fast as you can! Also, if he uses sand and other "no no's" it's probably a bad buy. I think setting up a home for the beardie is a good idea before you buy him, that's what I am doing. It will probably be way less stressful knowing your beardie has his home all set up. I don't know what the difference would make if you waited until you bought him...I think it would be harder on you and the dragon if you wait. I think you should ignore his "beardie tips"(talk with other beardie owners on bd.org) or just stay clear of the breeder. Hope that helps!

I would absolutly have a set going before hand. I had mine nearly a month and made sure everything was just right(humidity, temps, lighting, etc). Follow you gut on this one! Also i'm not to sure how happy a dragon you would get from someone who seems he first care is money in the bank.

Absolutely get your set up ready...as well as feeders...lots LOL

It really can take a while to get the temps correct...I think most of us *newbies* here will attest to that! :shock:

Search the site under 'Enclosures' for lighting, substrate, decor etc and look through the pics as well...you will get all the *correct* info from here

One thing I would love to mention is when you are buying your lighting...I strongly suggest using a dimmer switch! LOL I went crazy moving the basking spot up and down and up and down....LOL and finally got a dimmer switch! ta da! Best *accessory* purchase I made by far Move the switch up and down and the temp is adjusted.....

I could never have done this without the members here...the support and friendships abound on here...enjoy!

Thanks everyone you have all been really helpful. im deffinitly going to keep looking for another breeder. ive been trying to find one close to where i live (connecticut) but i really havent had any luck.
