I just got back from the vet with my girl Lego. She is 8 yrs old. She brumated the 1st time this past winter and woke up a new lizard. Very active and eating. Then a month later she started sleeping a lot, but I woke her up with a bath and then she'd eat a little. She stopped eating again a few weeks ago, maybe a dandelion leaf now and then. The vet took x-rays and said she has calcifications thru-out her organs and her bones are thinning. He said she is dying and she knows it, and that is why she is sleeping and not eating. She perks up outside, but can barely stand up. He said I could soak her in pedialyte to make her a little more comfortable than just a water soak, so I did. He said his guess would be 2 weeks or so. I pretty much knew before I took her that she was dying, but wanted to be sure there was nothing to be done for her. But, now how do I stop crying everytime I look at her? In 2 weeks I have to be away for 2 nights for a family affair, I will be so upset if I am not there. (My neighbor is watching her, so she will not be alone) Sorry, but I just had to talk to someone who understands. Thanks for listening.

Please dont take this the wrong way or anything i think i would have her put to sleep and not wait the two weeks. For her and you both. I just lost my little girl right over a week ago. I know how hard it is... i cry and i cry, I miss her so very much. But i know in my heart shes in a better place and isnt suffering. I think i was lucky to a point i didnt know she was going to pass that day. I walked in and she was gone. But i didnt get to say goodbye to her. I dont think i could of handled knowing that she was going to pass in a few weeks time. My mind and heart wouldnt be able to handle it. You can say goodbye. `Its such a hard choice to make. *hugs* im here if you need to talk. I will keep you and her in my prayers and thoughts.

Thank-you for your reply. The vet offered the option to euthanize it, but said he is sure she is not suffering, it is the life of a bearded dragon. She will just go to sleep. She enjoyed being outdoors today, she brightened up to yellow and looked around at things passing. I will let her enjoy the nice weather. He could be wrong about the amount of time she has left. What is making it worse is my 18 year old cat is not well, and I think I have to make that decision for her, probably tomorrow. I'm praying she goes to sleep tonight and does not wake up tomorrow. I never had to decide this for a pet before.

My heart goes out to you, on both the cat and the beardie. Last year was a bad one for us, with a 16yo cat going with hyperthyroidism and cancer and six months later my 17 yo diabetic old guy finally couldn't hang on any longer. The best thing I can say is trust your instincts and trust your heart. You will make the right decisions. It is so tough to make the "putting them to sleep" decision, but the both times I did it, my vet assured me that it was the right thing to do and in cases such as these there are no wrong answers.

Take care!

I hope that the both of you can find comfort, although words hardly hold meaning in situations like this. My heart goes out to you!

My one thought on you leaving for your family trip: If she does end up passing while you're not with her, it's not because she loves you less, but most likely because she loves you more. A lot of times our companion animals can't bear to see us upset and so they pass in a manner that they find satisfactory. At the time, we feel completely left behind and abandoned when we're not with them at the end, but in reality they do it because they want us to be comfortable too.

I hope that whatever happens you will find peace. *hugs to you and your little one*

I have had and lost various pets over the years but have only had my (first) beardie just over a week. I can't believe how much I am in love with him after such a short time so I can only imagine how you must feel. My heart goes out to you and Lego. I hope the rest of your time together is wonderful. You are both in my thoughts.

i totally agree. i've lost many pets throughout my life and it seems like most of them die when/where i can't see them do it. it's like, as long as i'm around, they decide to hold on just that little bit longer until i leave the room. again, i'm sorry sorry about lego. you are in my thoughts.

Reading your post has reduced me to tears.....know the feeling of losing something which is a part of your heart. My dog died in my arms when she was 15, that was nearly four years ago and it still hurts. But the memories and love never go away and that is what has helped me to this day. I thought I could never love another pet again and just over a week ago became the proud parent to two Beardies, Garfield and Odie. I am taken a back by the love I feel for them already and just hope I have many happy years ahead of me which you have had with Lego :) be strong and listen to your heart-no regrets yeah!

Hello,

I am sorry to hear of the vet's diagnosis of Lego & that your cat is ill as well. Do you mind however, if I ask a few questions?
At 8, she certainly is getting a little older, but, her lifespan could be a good amount longer.
Can I ask what type of tank setup that you have? Such as what type & brand of UVB lighting are you using, is it a fluorescent tube bulb or a compact/coil light? How old is the UVB lighting?
Do you use calcium 3 times per week for her?
What types of foods does she eat?
Did the vet do a blood test on her to determine her calcium levels right now? Did he specifically say that she had metabolic bone disease or what he felt the cause of the organ calcification might be? Oversupplementation "can" cause organ calcification due to either poor absorption of the supplement being given, or too much synthetic vitamins given such as the fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A,D,E, & or K respectively.
Do you have any pictures to share with us, to give us an idea of her overall condition?

Thanks. Maybe I can help out.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
