Trying to dig what should I do

My beardie has been doing this for a while...... I'm not sure why I have waited so long maybe because I figured it was just a phases......... But every night before he goes to bed (He goes under this shelf type of thing in his cage picture is below) but when he first crawls in there I can hear him scratch he only does it like 2-3 times. Is there a reason he does this? I check for eggs just incase he is actually a she but I'm pretty sure he is a he lol. But what should I do?

Beardies as I like to call "scaly puppies" will do this much like a dog would to make his spot comfortable before bedding down for the night. Mine have little blankies they bed down in and do the same...it very cute to watch them make their little spot comfy. If your beardie were actually a female carrying eggs she would be spastically glass dancing all day as well as digging at the corners of her viv not just at bed time. They will all do this at night male and female.

If you want to double check the sex of your beardie check these pic's out and look for yourself you should beable to tell. :wink:

Do I need to put a blanket or sand or something for him to dig in or just let him scratch? I have slate at the bottom of my tank

Are you using a bulb or ceramic heat emitter at night? If using a bulb, it may be keeping him awake or the heat might be too hot for him to sleep comfortably.

You should put sand in the place where he goes to dig because if he finds he cant dig, he will become stressed so try putting quite alot of sand there

I don't use anything at night he has a black tank.

What would be the safest thing to put in there... play sand?

Peronally I don't recommend sand at all....it's nasty stuff and clogs their nostrils, is a pain in the you know what, but that's just my opinion. None of mine stress without sand to dig in. The are just getting comfy they don't need sand to be comfy. Think about how they wiggle their little butts to get snuggled into your chest or neck to nap....just getting comfy. When a dog digs on his doggie bed do you put sand in it because he looks like he's digging? However if you believe that he needs sand then yes playsand is the safest.

I went ahead and bought a wash cloth and put it down there it is sleeping on it tonight so thats good.... I'm still trying to figure out his eating habbit though

How long have you had him?
What and when are you feeding him?
How much is he consuming?
