I have just booked an appointment for tomorow with a vet because my dragon has black teeth. It started months when he was on a baby food only diet. Now he wont eat solids, just baby food again.
Treatment usually consists of treating the mouth with diluted solutions of Betadine and Nolvasan. The plaques that form along the teeth and gums must be dislodged - preferrably by a vet. It is important that the plaques not be injested by the Beardie. After the debris is cleaned out of the mouth, antibiotic treatment can begin. During the course of the antibiotic therapy, the mouth should be checked daily to watch for any regrowth of plaques. It is not unusual for this process to be repeated two or more times during recovery. Particularly severe cases may require more than a single treatment.

Is that the proper treatment the betadine and nolvasan?

Hello,

Yes, the betadine wash is fine, as long as it is not ingested in large amounts! You can use a very soft toothbrush or a swab to try & clean out the mouth.
Do you have any pictures of your dragon's mouth? Sometimes, the discoloration on the teeth is just staining & happens with age also but is not necessarily mouth rot.

Hello,

That is really hard to tell if it is true mouth rot but the pictures are great.
I can definitely see the black on his teeth though. It is probably just food, but have you tried using a tooth brush to help clean his teeth off. It is a good idea that you are taking him in to see the vet just to make sure it isn't something more serious.
I couldn't specifically tell if along the bottom of the gumline, if that was just his gum lining, or if it looked kind of like pus or cottage cheese type of material. The vet can determine that through more examining of the area.

How is he doing today?

Yes I've tried to brush his teeth with a small brush type thing that came in a Braun electric shaver. The black rotten plaque stuff between and all teeth is really hard and i couldnt get any off. I even tried gently scraping it with the tip of a pin in one area..
I had him out on the patio today after giving him some soyogurt for the first time in a while and this is what he was doing. I have never seen him dunk his head under the water like this before.

Hello,

Well, some of it may be stains but getting the vet to look up close at it, hopefully he will be able to see what could be going on! That is an interesting video of him playing in the water. Incredible that he holds his breath like that underwater! Has he ever done that before? Thanks for posting that of him.
He doesn't have any respiratory issues, right? He is a nice looking dragon, by the water!

Ok let's hope he can remove them with not to much trouble I was worried thinking all his teeth are rotting away and will have to get them removed or a big surgery.
Yeah he has never dunked his head like that before he usually Sits in one place and barely moves around. I jus usually use a medium sized blue rubber maid container not see through. I Think he likes the clear pyrex dish, the water was nice and cool to because it was pretty warm out.
So tomorrow is there anything I should let the vet know?

Hello,

Ah, sorry I was not able to get back with you until late. I had some things come up today.
Did you end up getting some blood work on him, or did you get a fecal done? What did the vet say regarding his teeth?

I hope it went well!

Hey Tracie, That's okay I know your a busy girl. I phoned the animal hospital this morning when I was on my way and the secretary said the doctor had an emergency and had to take his wife to the hospital. We rescheduled for friday. Today I had Lenny out at the park and after a minute he had a bowel movement on his own. I guess the soy yogurt worked after 1 feeding + daily long baths. Last time was a week or 2 ago and was forced, his stomach felt really tight like he was backed up at the time. I thought it was from the superworm shells but it was actually an oversized urate, he didnt go for a couple weeks. Beginning of August he ate like 14 supers in 1 feeding that was his last real meal.

Hello,

Oh, so you went to the vet today then?
How did that go?
That can happen & cause constipation also, if they are backed up from a larger urate than normal! Does he drink plenty of fluids? Maybe try to increase his oral fluids to see if that helps out a little bit for him. I am sure that the soy yogurt did help with giving some fiber & some fluids to his GI tract!
I hope he is doing well today.

Yes i went to the vet and the dr said that he seems really healthy, he weighed him at 480 grams. He looked at his teeth and its not mouthrot its tartar and plaque caked on. He also said not to hand feed him any baby food. Im suppose to go back in 2 weeks with a fecal to examine no cost, will weigh him again and see if he has lost weight, if he did then we will do blood work or whatever it takes.
I went into a local pet shop today and they had horned worms so i bought a few and he ate 2 fat ones.
This is the vet here

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
