To bathe or not to bathe?

I couldnt decide where the best place would be to post this question. So i recently acquired 2 awesome healthy almost 2 year old beardies. The family we got them from truly loved and cared for them well. I am new to beardies and there's so much conflicting info out there it can get extremely confusing. One thing i thought was pretty awesome with these 2 guys is the previous owner said they are basically potty trained. Both prefer not to poop in there terrarium but in the bath. So she bathed them 2-3 times per week. Of course occasionally they poop in there terrarium but not often at all which makes cleaning so much easier. Well i posted this on a beardie fb group and got chewed out. Believe me im in no way trying to hurt them. I will do whatever is best for them. They really enjoy the bath time. But on the fb group many people said beardies shouldn't have baths unless soiled or impacted and that only pooping in the bath is unhealthy because it can cause them to poop before there food has been fully digested. Although since ive had them there poop looks great. Not undigested food. Are baths ok? They are both healthy and probably just a bit on the over weight side to be honest. And one more question off that topic. I got chewed out for one more thing. As I said before my intentions are all good with these new babies of mine so please be nice. People ask questions because they care and want to do the right things. So there enclosures are decorated with natural things to climb and bask on ECT. But I added comfy cute beds I bought off etsy that they seriously love. It may sound silly but they both snuggle with there pillows and sleep on the beds. They both have caves where they always slept at there old house but they love these beds. I wash them on the sanitary cycle in the washing machine twice a week and obviously would right away if soiled. The fabric is not weaved or anything for them to get a claw stuck in. I was chewed out for the beds being a fire hazard which i truly don't understand how that could be and that it's unsanitary. Which if thats true even though I keep them very clean I will get rid of them. They also have matching cloth hammocks which i wash the sane as the beds and was told thats bad for the same reasons. Id love others opinions as i only want whats best for them. I am new to all this so there's no need to be angry though. Thank you all so much! Im attaching a pic of one of there enclosures with the bed and hammock. Please note they came with there enclosures and i have since fixed the lighting appropriately. Moving the uvb over the basking area and replacing the ceramic heat emitters with white basking bulbs so we are all good lighting and temp wise.

Baths are fine as long as they enjoy them. Some dragons don't like baths and it causes stress that is not worthwhile unless they are really soiled and need to be cleaned. Since these two are used to baths and like them, go for it. My guy loves to swim around a bit in a bath for 5-10 min or so at a time (don't want the water getting too cold).

As far as the beds/blankets go, that's just fine too. If they enjoy them and find them comfortable then it's a good thing to add. I like adding fleece blankets to the bottom of the tank to allow burrowing. Some people have decorations including beds and other furniture for them. It all comes down to how you want to decorate your enclosure and what your dragons prefer. Since they all seem to like different things, test stuff out and see what works best in your situation.

I agree with Cooper and was going to write the same. It sounds like those people on the FB group have too much time on their hands and so they nit pick as a hobby. :) One thing I would bring attention to is to have a bright light for basking rather than the ceramic heater [ CHE ] They thrive in bright enclosures so the CHE should only be used at night if the temp. goes below 65 F.

Ok thanks guys :) there enclosures came set up that way. I have since taken out the heat emitter added a white basking bulb and moved the uvb light fixture to the right so its over the basking area as well. :) i live in Arizona so definintly no need to heat at night here lol

I haft to ask do your UVB fixtures have reflectors on them ? It is hard to tell - if not you need to move the UVB w/ in 4-6 inches of basking decor or get a reflector - If you want or need to get a reflector I can give you a website to order them from

Yes i have a reflector i switched the uvb to retisun t5 10.0 with a reflector hood and 12-14 inches in distance to my beardies. This is correct right?

Yes, that distance is fine ! And I apologize for missing that you mentioned in your original post that you had a white basking bulb. If I had taken extra time to go over the post I would have seen it. Sorry about that ! You're going to be a great beardie parent. :)

No i totally appreciate it!! We rescued our first beardie. He was only 6 months old and had mbd so bad. He ended up with cancer and had to be put to sleep. We only got 6 weeks with him and it was heartbreaking!! His first owners did no research and he never had uvb or anything. Im no profesional at this but have atleast done lots of research. I think its great to nicely point things out just in case people dont know. :)

Oh gosh i was worried when it got to 107 lol i thought 95-105. Lol i am learning. I have probe thermometers and a high end heat gun to double check. I just want everything perfect especially after seeing what happened to our first baby from not having proper care before us.

Babies tend to like it warmer but as they get older not so much- so it's good to offer a heat gradient that way they can pick a spot they like for temps

I'm glad you are here.
I had an issue right at the beginning where I took my 3 kids to a reptile 'expo' thinking we might meet some people who were willing to help/talk to us, and all we got is rudeness.
Then I found this article https://reptifiles.com/elitism-in-reptile-hobby/ and also saw some of it on another message board and felt just like you.
But here has been much better. :)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
