Thanks guys, your comments really mean a lot! I tried to post this earlier but I just keep getting so upset. But I thought I would let you all kno a little of Abu's last few days with us.
We think Abu was hiding whatever was wrong with her, very well. About 4 weeks ago, she stopped eating much - maybe a tiny bit of salad every few days. She rarely pooped and was quite sleepy during the day.... but there was a bit of a heat wave so we put her behaviour down to the fluctuating viv temp - as if she was escaping from the heat by going to the darkest, coolest spot in her viv.
Then, last Friday, we decided to switch off the T-rex as we thought she may be trying to escape from the heat/uv output from it. We switched on the regular basking bulb and arcadia strip. She was, immediately, like a whole different beardie, wandering around the viv, basking and sitting on her favourite turtle log. Whilst doing this changeover, we noticed that she had 2 urates that day with no real poop - but as she wasnt eating, we thought thats why there was no poop. By Sunday, she still had not eaten much - just a little salad, but was active and basking and seemed content. Again, there were urates but no poop. Around 6pm tho, we went down to check on her. We found her lying flat out with some brown goo on the side of her face. Her beard was slightly black and when I picked her up, we noticed she had been sick. We gave her a
bath and she swam around before jumping out, by herself, when she had had enough!! After that, she roamed around the living room with us for a while and when we set her on the window ledge, she began glass dancing - she then ventured in towards Kazi's viv. Kazi immediately went into his log to go to sleep and she jumped and danced outside his viv, trying to get his attention. Her
black beard had eased off by now so I put her back in her viv and she ran around there for a while. When we came back down to put her to bed, she was lying flat out on her log with her eyes closed. We got her out for a quick cuddle and put her back in to settle herself for the night. She just went straight to her sleeping spot. A while later when we checked on her, we realised she was sleeping with a
black beard.
We were both working on Monday, but her grandma gave her lots of love and stayed with her all day. She woke up with a
black beard but it had pretty much disappered by the time she got warmed up. She got a nice long
bath where she took a big drink before having some time to roam around. Back in her viv she remained active and happy for most of the day. But at around 4.30pm she fell off her log. Things started to go downhill from there and by around 6pm she was fighting to breathe - I didnt witness it but everyone else is being completely haunted by what they saw. I honestly believe she waited for her daddy to get home before she let go as her struggling stopped shortly after he got home - he says she lifted her head right back, stretched her mouth wide open and looked him in the eye - it broke his heart. I was just a little too late as I believe she had passed by the time I got there. We took her to the vet - but we both knew she was gone - we just needed to check - she just looked like she was sleeping.
The vet started talking about calcium problems - she was lying there, dead, in his hands and he didnt even realise she was gone.... he said 'when did she loose the use of her limbs?' I felt like screaming - 'when she died!' To me, the first thing he should have done was to check for her heart beat, instead of giving us that little glimmer of hope that she might still be alive! But we wont dwell on that. We personally think she may have had more serious internal problems than we could know. Possibly a kidney issue. But she died peacefully, in her viv, with her family watching over her.
Today we cleared out her viv and scrubbed it clean. We put all her things in a box and put her turtle log on the spot where she is buried. Now the viv is just sitting there, empty. It just doesnt seem right - Abu should be in there. But as much as its hurting us right now, we have the little Kazi-man to look after and love.
Once again, thank you all for being such a great help to us since we became beardie parents! As devastated as we are, we are greatful for the time that we had Princess Abu in our lives!
