throwing up blood

syd is 6 years old. always very healthy. good weight and good set up. sees a rep vet once a year. today she pooed a little with blood in it. then a little while later she threw up, a lot, and it was deep red like blood and kind of coagulated. its saturday late afternoon and i cant find a vet to see her until monday morning. what can i do? what is wrong? someone, please??? diane

I'm super super sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but has Syd eaten anything red lately? (Asking because I gave our male part of a raspberry once and it turned his poop a bit red... I started to worry but then realized it was probably the raspberry. Which, turns out it was just the raspberry. )

But throwing up red doesn't sound too fun. I know dehydration is a concern in mammals who throw up, so maybe make sure she gets extra water and/or a bath today? I'm also thinking soft foods may be a good idea instead of crunchy bugs, just in case something is hurting her tummy (I'm not an expert though! I'm sure Tracie (Drache613) will have some good ideas so you could PM her as well )

thanks for your reply. no, she hasn't eaten much of anything lately. that's normal for during brumation this time of year. i'll try to contact tracie.

i agree with the extra water. pedialyte baths were good for my baby when he was getting dehydrated on meds so i'd try some pedialyte. crossing my fingers that she feels better soon.

thanks to all three of you for trying to help me last night. i was finally able to find a 24 hour vet who agreed to see sydney. she was still gagging up blood when we got her to the office. they took xrays and showed me a huge mass in her stomache (cancer). she had already lost so much blood that they told me the humane thing to do was to euthanize, which i did. we spend the morning making a small wooden box and burying her in my backyard. i am soo heartbroken. thanks again. diane

I'm soo sorry Sydney died. You had a very hard choice but I believe you did the right thing for her. I have lost 5 beardies since 2006 and it hurts every time you loose one. I'm thankful for the time I've had them but it still hurts when I loose them.
