The whole "black beard" thing...

I was just looking through the pictures in the "Photo Expressions" of the beardies displaying their black beards. I knew all about this phemonenon but had no idea that THIS is what it looks like!! I have never, ever seen Spike with a black beard... is this weird? I've seen him puff it up a little bit, but never actually turn black!

Not weird at all. Some beardies will never get that angry to display a full black beard. Consider yourself lucky :wink:

I've only ever seen Bentley blackbeard at the sound of the vacuum in the hallway, and it was quite a sight! I'm glad that Spike is in a low-stress environment

Our Dragon, Bill seems like an easy going dragon, she never see her hiss or has black beard... She is quite calm, but sometime she give me a "death stare" when I bathe her.
She has been shedding for a couple days, and this morning I saw all of her back was shed. I think it would be nice if put him in a nice warm water... thought she gonna like it.. but I was wrong. (She usually have her bath in the early evening). She give me a stinky death stare, and for the first time I saw her really puff her beard. It was scary!. :shock: :shock: :? She was so MAD!!! I even thought that she gonna bit me.

I'm newly adopted by a beardie and was reading your blog... When you mentioned that your beardie became upset, and puffed up her beard, what are you supposed to do if that happens? That is a huge concern of mine and I'm afraid I would freak out and close off that side of the house for a few days! LOL No, not, really, but seriously, how would you handle a really ticked off beardie without getting bit?

Ha mine is a little s**t. Hes ok when i'm holding him but if he jumps from my hand, then he stresses out and black beards all the time. I find if i put a small hand towel over his back, leave him to calm down, then i pick him up in the towel and stroke him but i'am also unsure wether its ok to just pick him up when he as a black beared, took me 10 minutes to calm him down the other day. So would also like to know if i just pick him up when hes trying to bite or leave him to calm down?

I have seen a really big and puffy beard but never black beard. I quess we have very good tempered dragons....

So far none have black bearded. Lexia i think she will lol She at 9 weeks puffs out her little beard and turns it dark. Im sure shes going to be our little black bearder!

I have a question?? I have 2 dragons in a tank together and until this morning they have been great together. However my male starting trying to bite on the back of my females head and puffing his beard (getting dark also) out at her and bobbing his head. He acts like he is mad at her... I read a few comments on here that you are not supposed to have 2 in one tank? I have a 120 gallon tank for the 2 of them.. I need help I really do not want to have to choose between the 2 of them but I dont want one killing the other!!! Please help.....

You should get another tank and seperate them before things get out of hand and one of them gets hurt.

How old are these dragons? If I'm not mistake, this could be mating.

We have been proud care-givers to an adult male beardie and we're lucky to see him without a black beard still. It will be nice to see him relax and be more comfortable in his new enclosure and home.

I am not positive about their age, but approximately 8-10 months old. The male is about 14-16 inches long head to end of tail if that helps any?

Either way they should be seperated, if you keep them together there's a good chance of injury or other dominance issues.
