I took my guy to the vet for the first time. It was a little scary for me because they were squeezing, grabbing and turning him all around. I got upset.

I know Beardies are not all that sensitive, but I was freaking out! Is my vet just not a reptile place?
The lady was like, have you ever turned him upside down and rubbed his tummy? But that's bad right?
Lol sorry just wondering if anybody else gets tearful at the vet.

I have no idea if it's true or not, but I have heard that it's difficult for them to breathe when they're on their backs...

Is your vet advertised as a clinic that treats reptiles? I had to search around a bit for one and only found two within a reasonable distance from me...

If he really does need a tummy rub because he's not pooping, do it while he's standing in a warm bath.

My vet felt Striker all over and rotated her arms and legs on her first visit; but he was gentle, and although Striker obviously wasn't comfortable, she wasn't being hurt.

If you're really not satisfied with your vet or have ANY doubts, I'd say find a new one; one that is a reptile specialist. The peace of mind is worth it, and your baby deserves the best care you can find him. :)

um, what? is this a herp vet?

i would have asked if she even knew anything about reptiles because you don't do that. ever.

i would suggest finding a different vet.

my mom brought her birds (macaw and eclectic) to a nearby bird vet to get their wings clipped and beaks trimmed. the lady wasn't horrible, just plopped them down, threw a towel over them and cut away. my mom had to leave the room, the birds were screaming.
and she did a horrendous job with the wings.
now they pay someone to come to their home and clip the wings. they wrap them in a towel gently and talk to them and take their time. and they charge less than the vet.

it's like some people don't really *care* about the animals they are supposedly trained to take care of. if you don't feel comfortable with how they handle your pets do't go back, and leave a review about it too. i wouldn't want to go to someone who didn't handle the animals gently.

Please find another vet. I had to go to 3 different ones before I found one that truly knew what she was doing...and I drive almost 3 hours to get to her.

Damn! I live in a small town so when it is something minor i take my dragons to the local vet and even she doesn't do that! My vet does research and calls other vets if she doesn't know something. I say find another vet. Geeezzz.. I would have picked my dragon up and left. No one can handle my babes like that.

Yeah, I thought that was a little strange! it was one of those vets that takes reptiles but is mostly a dog/cat place. Going to a new vet if we ever need to.
Thank you.

my vet is very inexperienced with reptiles. he's had a few in there but he is very gentle and willing to learn. when our youngest one was ill he took the time to call some other vets and go print us out some information on taking care of him while he was sick. he gave us the correct dosage and everything. we decided to stick with him so that we can give him some more reptile experience. granted if he were to not know what is wrong with one when we take them in we'd seek a second opinion, but sometimes they haven't been given the opportunity to work with the animals and really enjoy helping them.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
