The Holy Buddha!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I just bought a 2 year old Bearded Dragon tonight - I was told it was a female, so I decided to name it "Satori" which is a Japanese Buddist term for Enlightenment, however when I checked to make sure of the sex, it turns out SHE was a HE.
Plain as day, he is a hefty boy! I guess the family I bought him from said it was a girl, becuase it was their human girl who was its "owner" (her dad did most of the work)....Little girls want all of their pets to be girls, right?

Anyways, so when I got him home, I saw that he was quite the porker... and because I have a Buddha statue to be put in his terrarium (I was gonna use it for Satori), I decided to name him Buddha; also because he has a "buddha belly"

So Everyone, lets welcome Buddha to the BeardedDragon.org Community!

Buddha's vivarium (in revision!) ... I am taking out the two sides of wood and puttin in plexi glass, and then puttin a screen top to his viv! .... I might also take out his tile (it is hard to clean :S)

Haha, he definately needs one, but I am worried about bathing him so quickly after I brought him home!

He is still a little freaked out after I totally "pimped" his cage. I guess you can call it Viv-Flipping! Lol. You've seen the old viv in the pics above, so now it is my turn to post what all i did! ... It took me 8 hours in total, with just over 100 in supplies.

I painted the wood a dark "whittal" brown, ripped out the old tile and put tread mill track over top(it is great traction!), bought fake ivy plants, a Buddha statu, a water fall(it is a side project to get the water fall to get running), as well as his hidey logg, and some fake flowers sticking out of little old pot. I am putting in a giant basking rock for him tomorrow and a bigger food dish. I also bought a temperature guage (the one with the wire and the digital screen) and of course bought him some food (endives, kale, peppers, butternut squash, super worms) I will be getting Crickets in the morning, I was very late getting to Petland where they sell the things, so the wormies will do for now.

Can someone PM me if they are a Guru on temperate guages and bulbs for heat? I am struggling to get his Viv to 100F in the hot end. and 80 in the coool. I have a MVB, and was told by a Mod to keep it 14 inches away, and then have it at 100F, by using bulbs that dont emitt UVA or UVB. I have a heat bulb that doesnt emit light or UVA/UVB but the guage is about 7 inches from the bulb and yet I only have 89 F.

I will definately post photos asap!

mvb have to be at least 12 inches away

what kind of thermometer are you using?
is it a digital with a probe?
if it is a dial or stick on those can be very innacurate



also how long is your viv?

not sure about that flooring i have never heard of it as long as there isnt any paste or glue on the back it should be fine though

don't worry about getting your waterfall to work. it will raise the humidity in the tank to high which could cause respiritory issues.

I have a digital thermometer with the probe

Buddha's Viv is 4 ft long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet high.

The lights are on a metal screen (it is like 1cm square chicken wire almost)
so there is no problem with light being filtered through glass or anything.

Im going to get a bigger basking rock for Buddha so he can be closer to the MVB and the no light but heat lamp.
I have the probe above where Buddha is now and it is only reading about 85F (estimate, i didnt look this morning) ..... so im not sure how to get it more hot in there.

If your entire top is a mesh screen the heat is escaping out the top. If you have sliding doors on the front you may want to put a few boards or something up there to partially block the top and that will help you retain more heat. If you don't want to do that then I would suggest getting a 5 buck clamp lamp at Walmart and try out a few different wattages of regular soft white house bulbs to get the additional heat you are looking for. Place the probe right onto where he will sit on the basking spot so you are getting the temps from there.

hmmm... That could be my problem, the wire mesh top.
The problem is, is that the lights are ontop of his cage, where the doors are (the open up from the top so I can grab him.... theres no other way I can get into his terrarium. so the lights are moved each time I open the doors. .... I need a new way of attaching the lights to his Terrarium.

Any Ideas?

What brand and wattage MVB are you using?
I always suggest with the MVB that you use an infrared temp gun.
When you say no light heat lamp are you talking about the ceramic heat emitter?
