terrified of crickets

well its been a long time since my last post (mostly due to my bearies well being) but as of late she's being acting strange when i put crickets in with her. her temps are fine, basking spot is under a mega ray mercury vap. bulb and she'll be a year old in april. she eats her collards greens almost regularly but she seems to be scared to death of her crickets. as soon as i put one in she turns her head, takes one look at it then bolts in the opposite direction jumping up, running into the glass, frantically trying to climb up the glass to escpape the cricket. i am completely lost as to why she is doing this but it seems she is traumatized somehow. ive had to make the switch to super worms as a regular feed but lately she has become bored with them and doesnt really pay them much attention. i cant seem to find any stores near me that sell dubia's which is something i'd like to try.does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should try and feed her? any help or advice is much appreciated thanks.

well, you could try giant mealworms, or possibly superworms, most people on here may say that your beardie should be 16 inches or so before feeding superworms, but if you feed 1 at a time they can easily handle it, its only when they take like 5 at once at swallow all of it at once it could turn into a problem . Dubia's are rare to find in stores, but are everywhere online, especially in the states. http://www.theroachranch.com and some other sites are great sources for roaches, hope this helped.

thanks for your reply, as previously stated she is currently being fed supers and she is beyond 16in. never have i seen her eat 5 at once, its usually one every few seconds, and only 5-6.

I'd be wary of the mealworms. They can cause impaction.

does anyone think it is strange for a predator to be terrified of its measly prey other than me? i think for the mean while i will stick with super worms. if anyone has any suggestions as to what i can do to get her back on crickets that would be a help. thanks!

Hi, sorry to hear that your beardie won't eat all those crickets you just got. Sometimes they are bothered by jumping crickets so you might want to try either removing the 2 back legs or putting a few in a ziploc bag and placing it in the fridge for a few minutes to help slow them down. How many crickets do you feed at one time? Is it possible that some crickets might have been left in the tank overnight and could have bitten her?

thanks for your reply. she actually hasnt been offered crickets in a couple months now because of her reaction to the single crickets i put in with her, i tried the freezer trick and always used to pull the legs off. i usually only fed her 1 at a time because i noticed they would all escape while 1 or 2 unlucky suckers took the hit for the team. i think i am just going to give dubai's a chance, hopefully she likes them and they dont cost too much thanks for your time

I'm sure she'll like dubia, they are a great hit with our 3 adults and 5 mo old. Very easy to care for and breed quickly. They are also very reasonably priced.
