Taking my beardie out and about

Hi guys! I have an almost 5 month old beardie, and I've seen so much about people taking their beardies out to shops etc with them, I was wondering what age you can start taking him out of the house?

What are some ways that I should start getting him used to things like that?

Thanks!

It depends on his attitude and your local weather. It's best to limit trips in cool weather, mid 70+ is a good temp, the cooler the weather the shorter the trip unless you bring heat.

Some dragons are terrified of the outdoors, so you'll want to make sure he feels ok out of the house and won't bolt away. Spend some time out I the yard or porch or whatever you have so he can get used to the noises and sights before trying any trips.

We've been traveling with Pepper since he was about 5-7 months. He is particularly mellow though, and never tries to run/jump away. We don't really take him to shops (I'm worried about the commotion stressing him and him potentially getting sick) but we've gone to the park and spend a lot of time in the yard in the summer.

Awesome! And I assume you use a harness every time you take him out, even just in the garden? Did you buy a harness for him or make one? Most I've seen are for adult beardies, my guy is still a bit small for most of those.

I don't use a harness, but only because Pepper is super super mellow. He is fine sticking pretty close to me (basically arms reach or sitting on me) and I am watching him the entire time. If he was at all prone to wandering, or running off I would use a rope style harness. They look easy to make and the least cumbersome for the dragon to wear.

Taterbug said it well. It all depends on the dragons personality. My youngest is 5 months old and I have been taking him places for at least 2 months. I don't use a harness on him since he is very calm. Try spending some time outside with him to see his reaction. This should help you determine how he would react to going places.

My beardie is only a month old and I've already taken her places with me. She just sits up on my chest and enjoys being out with me. She's small enough for me to carry her blanket in my purse in case she gets spooked or something. Then I just wrap her up and let her take a nap to calm down. I tried making a harness for her but she didn't like it. She's probably a little to small for one anyway.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
