My male hypo het trans silkback was put into his own enclosure on Friday. On satuday we notced the bottom half of his tail was black and thinning. Come Sunday the infection had spread up more of his tail.
So its Sunday night and we read the only solution is amputation.
I amputated the tail pretty much at the base(did not want to make two cuts if I didn't get the entire infected area) and used the quick clot stuff for pets to top the bleeding, which stopped rather quickely with it. I put him in a bath half hour later to wash the clotting off. I then applied polysporin over the area.
He did not make any sudden movements as I did the task, and seems rather calm since then(likely because the tail was causing him immense pain already?).
My questions are: With moving around a little bit, should I expect a full recovery aside from the missing tail?
Will he be able to breed when that time comes? Do males rely heavily on the tails for positioning(I tried searching the web and found nothing on this)?
Thanks in advance.
