tail discoloration - shed or ...?

Hi! I've had Barbossa about 5 weeks, and the base of his tail has gradually gotten dark and dull (it seems to be defined along specific scale lines). It's my understanding that areas that need to shed get lighter in color, not darker, so I'm not sure what's going on with this! Should I be worried??

Here's his tail in the bath this morning:
full

and for reference, his tail 5 weeks ago the day I brought him home (I've since gotten rid of the reptile carpet):
full

He's had one partial shed of half his face, beard, and body, and his little legs look like they're getting ready. But this tail thing has been gradually happening for weeks. Why is it getting so dark and dull??

If it helps, here are the answers to the questions!

Everything sounds great!!!!!!!!!! Except this 6-8 inches this is way to close for a T 5 if its inside the tank -- if its on top of screen 8-10 inches from basking decor -- it should be 12-15 inches from basking decor if its inside the tank --- and it looks like his tail is going to shed ---- they can get darker or even lighter ---

His UVB is on top of the screen, it's more like 6-8 from his head when he's sticking his head up while basking. From the decor it's about 9-10 inches away! Does that sound okay?

Phew! Thanks :) So if the darker part is shed, any idea why it is taking so long? It's been darkening at least 2 or 3 weeks. I just worry it's getting tight!

It can take that long -- its just natural --- when it starts to get crackly and starting to peel you can take some warm water and baby tooth brush and brush it to gently start to remove some of it -

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
