Substrate help, custom enclosure

I just recently built my own enclosure out of plywood. I made my own fake rock that covers a lot of the enclosure with basking spots and pillars and staircases and such. The one thing I am having a hard time with is what substrate to use. Some kind of sand would be so much easier to just pour in and be done. However I know there is the risk of impaction plus I don't want him stained and faded (he already is from being on red sand.) But it would be extremely hard to cut tile or something to fit perfectly in the bottom. I don't want to use something like paper towels because that would take away from the awesomeness of the rest of the cage (yes awesomeness is a word). I guess I could just keep him on the wood but then the mess of the tile grout where it meets the wood shows.

Does anyone have any ideas or something they have done with odd shaped floors of custom cages?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
