I'm not 100% sure about the gender of my bearded dragon but I'm fairly certain it's a male. Ever since I've gotten my beardie (5 months ago as a long awaited christmas pressent) he's been particularly fond of pushing his nose into corners/blankets/holes and making digging motion. Currently he's 15 inches long and gains about 1/2 inches a week, weighs 260 g.
I don't keep him on losse substrait, the floor is rough tile, but I have thrown in a blanket and some hand towls which durring the evening he works on digging into to make a bed and sleeps there durring the night. During the day he's quite active and basks frequently (basking temp usually reads 100-108F). I recently made him a hide out of bricks and wood and now he sleeps there every night instead of in the blankets. However since he's also in my room I get to hear *scratch* *scratch* *scratch* for about 2 hours every night as he scratches at the brick sides of the hide. Needless to say his nails are pretty dull.
I just want to know what's up with this behavior? Should I be worried? Will he eventually mellow out and stop digging in the evening like this? Should I get him a box of sand to play in? I wouldn't want to make his whole enclosure with a substrate but maybe I can put in a sandbox that takes up about 1/3 of the floor space maybe?
