Strange vigorous "wiggling" and face rubbing.

Today my 13-14 year old female bearded dragon began doing a bizarre and vigorous wiggling. It looks a lot like the "poopy wiggle" they do. My mind initially goes to impaction, however she has been pooping everyday like normal, and the feces has been normal aside from being a bit small. Her appetite has been a bit lower this last week, but mostly in regards to her greens. She is still taking her squash and bugs. So I attributed the slightly smaller poops to the small decrease in appetite. She also started rubbing her face/nose area on her tank furniture and on the ground. This lasted for several minutes before she settled onto her basking spot and was acting normal again. I did take her out of her enclosure afterwards to get a good look at her and I also gave her a bath in case she was having a hard time pooping. She bearded a bit in response to being taken out of her enclosure which is unusual for her. The bath seemed to do some good as she calmed down, stress marks faded and her colors lightened a bit. No poop though, nor did she exhibit the wiggling in the bath.

Here is her basic care info and info about her. She is a "rescue". I took her in from some family that had her (I remember when they got her, which is why I know the age). They got a lot of bad info from petco unfortunately, and since she kept seeming fine to them they had no reason to explore the care further. Not that that is an excuse, but I digress. So 4ish months ago I found out that they were looking to get rid of her due to lack of interest and I decided to take her in. Especially after seeing that her care was sub-par. Kept on crushed walnut shells, mealworms and lettuce, no dusting of feeders, etc.

Anyways she is pretty much 16 inches long exactly. I have her in a 4'x2'x2' enclosure with slate tile as the substrate. I have a 24" reptisun 10.0 tube bulb mounted in the enclosure and her temps are 105F (she shows stress marks if it is lower) in the basking spot (white light) and the cold spot is always 80F plus or minus a degree or two. She gets dubia roaches/superworms/crickets on mon/wed/fri. Calcium with D3 dusting 3 times a week and vitamin once a week. I am also working phoenix worms into the rotation for both her and my 6-7 month old dragon (who has his own seperate but identical enclosure). She gets greens (mustard/collard/dandelion) daily plus diced butternut squash. Occasionally carrots and blueberries as a treat. I bathe her 2-3x per week since she really seems to enjoy baths.

I have been really excited about her because after a few weeks in my care she stated losing her stress marks. I had NO IDEA she was a brilliant yellow with grayish blue banding until she started showing lighter colors. I had to syringe feed her baby food the first week since she didn't seem to have energy to chase bugs or even eat greens. She went from lethargic to running and jumping after crickets and climbing and glass dancing. She has improved SO much over the last few months and I would hate for anything to happen to her now. I do understand that she is old for a beardie, especially one that hadn't been properly cared for. I am just trying to make her last stretch as pleasant and comfortable as I can and hopefully giving her as much time as I can.

She is going to the vet, but I can't get her to one for another week or so. This month held a lot of unforseen events that I had to deal with that drained my account. I have to pay rent with my next paycheck (no way around this or putting it off) and I'm broke right now. I feel awful about that and I may try to borrow money from family to take her in sooner.
This post kindof got away from me, so sorry about that. The main thing is can anyone shed any light on this behaviour and give me any idea of how serious it may be? Is waiting a week or so for the vet too long? I really appreciate any advice.

Is she shedding?? Thats the only thing I can think of that would cause something like that.

Well she is definitely not currently shedding and she isn't show any signs of an upcoming shed like dulled colors or anything. Although, I will definitely check her out for signs of shedding soon in the morning when she wakes up just in case I might not have noticed. I don't want to disturb her sleep right now.

Thank you for taking her in and making her life so much better.

No need to thank me, seeing her get healthier has been fantastic and all the thanks I need. Thanks for saying so though :). Anyways I have not gotten too much info from here or from the bearded dragon subreddit unfortunately. She definitely looked better today, and I am working on getting her to a vet ASAP.

I am sorry that we aren't much help. The only thing I can attribute the face rubbing to is shedding. Another thing that just occurred to me with the smaller poops and decreased appetite might be egg laying. I know very little about that, though. Is she digging at all? I do agree that a vet visit would be in order.

I actually noticed digging just last night before she went to sleep. So I will make a egg laying box for her and see if that's what is going on. According to the previous owners she definitely layed eggs a number of times in the past (none fertile obviously as she never mated). I lightly felt her abdomen and didn't feel anything like an egg shaped object so I dunno. Also, I do appreciate the responses :).

Please keep us posted on her progress. Sweet old girl.

You were right, found out she needed to lay some slugs. No other issues were found. I made her a lay box but she didn't lay any eggs for quite a while which was worrisome. However, as of today she has laid 8 and I think she might still have a few more to lay. She is still digging around in the lay box I made for her right now actually. I am just trying to keep her as hydrated and well fed (with loads of calcium) as I can. She has lost a bit of weight, but nothing too dramatic. Definitely want to get her looked at again when the process is done to make sure she gets through it ok. She is definitely not having any problems with digging/mobility and she is still not eating a ton but she isn't having difficulty eating or chasing bugs when she wants too. She goes nuts for dubia so I have been letting her eat them a lot even though my colony is not quite where I wanted it to be before any heavy feeding. Anyways, she seems to be doing alright and now I am just taking care of her while she lays and watching out for complications. It seems like she will be just fine and she certainly seems to have quite a bit of life in her still :).

Thanks for the update. So it was eggs! It sounds like she has lots of life in her yet, especially now that she has the loving care you are providing for her. :D

You are doing a great job taking care of her! She has gone through a lot and now can enjoy the rest of her life in a healthy home. Glad you brought your questions to us as I have a rescue that is showing the same signs. Didn't know if they would lay eggs without mating, but since she wants to dig I thought I should get her a box of sand to dig in. After reading this, it will be a priority today to get her set up so she can dig to her hearts content.

Congrats on your success and wish you and your beardie health and happiness!

yay for eggs.

she'll probably be drinking a lot of water once she is all done.

they normally lay about 30 -60 eggs. i am unsure if a female that age would lay less though. 13-14 years old is impressive.

Tasty Treat just laid a clutch a few days ago. she was in the box for around 8 hours. the next day she ended up popping out 1 more egg. She had me freaking out because she looked so weak and i could see her trying to push out more eggs, but she kept looking like she was falling asleep.
i had her laying on me and could feel her pushing. the next morning she was able to pass the egg after she slept and drank some water.

and yes, they look so skinny once they finish.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
