Hi all,

I posted a few weeks back that my beardie had a sore mouth. I have been bathing it every day and vet told me to use Tamodine twice a day which I've done. It's getting worse. He literally looks like he's go no bottom lip left. It wasn't really affecting him but now he's stopped eating and is hiding in his hide most of the time. He never used it before. I'm worried he's going to die but none of the vets near me seem to know much about reptiles. Any advice would be appreciated.

sounds to me like sever mouth rot you should promptly find an exotic vet that does know what to do. Ive heard that if it gets sever the need surgery so that might be your solution.

I suggest bringing him to a university with a veterinary medicine program and an exotics specialist. It will likely require a specialist with a fair amount of experience to deal with something like this. I'm brining mine out to one this afternoon to address severe mouth rot.

Hi there....I'm so sorry to hear about your poor dragon ! Can you get a picture of it to post ? Does he hold his mouth open, and can you see inside, does it look like there's " cheesy" substanc or is the wound only on the outside. I agree that you might look for a University that has a program where they can look at him for you . For now, get some unpasteurized honey to apply [ like from a health food store ]....it often works better than antiseptics because it has the same antimicrobial properties but it also promotes new tissue granulation while keeping it sterile. If you Google "raw honey as medicine " there is a huge amount of research, on people and animals so this is not just an old wives tale. It may help while you look for another vet. It's not very expensive for a small jar , probably less than $10, and it doesn't go bad.

Hello,

Oh it does sound quite serious based on your description.
A picture would be helpful for us. Were you able to find any unpasteurized honey also?
You will need some swabs too for help with cleaning his mouth out then apply the honey too for help with starting to clear up the infection.
Is he eating anything at all right now & what basking temperatures are you keeping him at?

I've got a picture but unsure how to post it. Looking at pictures of mouth rot it doesn't look like that. He's been rubbing it a lot on the glass.

That's some type of wound, not like mouth rot and not healing for some reason. It would be itchy/burning + sore so he is rubbing it. Like when you have poison ivy or a bad mosquito bite, you keep scratching even though it makes things worse. Do you leave crickets in the tank ? They can really get on him at night and make things worse, so as a precaution, make sure there are none in the tank. Poor guy, it sounds like he's pretty miserable....but it's good that he ate 2 crickets. Have you tried any raw honey on it ? You may find that it will do the trick.

I've only had him less than 2 months and I think he had the start of a sore when I got him.i don't leave crickets in as usually they don't last 5 minutes in there.

I've been bathing it daily and putting Tamodine vet solution on it. The guy I got him from said not too remove the sand so I left that in but have now took that out cos it was impossible to keep it clean.

I'll try some honey tomorrow when I buy some. Do I just dab it on?

Yes, just dab it on with a Q-tip. You can thin it out with a bit of warm water if it's very thick, and a little goes a long way. And definitely get the sand out. Any one on these boards will tell you the same, it can get in the wound and irritate or make it worse.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
