Solar power

I have been thinking about making my lights and heat pad solar powered so I don't up my houses electric bill by a whole lot. I was curious if anyone has done this and how if they had success? I wanted to hook a power strip up to the voltaic cells but need a away to store the energy for when the sun falls or to heat the tank at night and what not. Suggestions, ideas?
