Smells!

Okay, so today my dad issued an ultimatum: Get something to block the odors from my beardies or get the beardies out. So my mom and I bought odor-blocking sand. I'm really scared that theyre going to get impacted from the sand, but I don't know what else to do. How do all of you keep the odors at bay? Apparantly my room smells like you-know-what, but honestly I'm used so used to it I didn't even realize. :laughing6: Anyhow, is there anything safer for my babies that I can use to block out the smell? Thanks

Smells? What do you have as a substrate now (or before the sand?). I've never noticed a smell except when he's poo'd. But I clean that out asap and then the smell is gone. I use a lidded trashcan to keep the poo trash in also.

I use paper towels, but I really want to switch to tile. (I refuse to use the sand; only as a last resort). When I notice poop in the cage I clean it right out and throw it away outside. Eros and Zeffie usually go on their basking spots anyways so I'm always cleaning their spots in the sink. I'm thinking it may be the crickets smelling up my room? (I have 2 18x16 in tanks of 1000 crix) What do you think?

OHHHH most definitely it's the crix - those STINK! I'm sure that's what is causing the stink. My hubby said the same thing.

As for the viv - you can use non-adhesive shelf liner. I have that on the floor of my viv and I keep some paper-towels in an area where Angus seems to poop most times, makes it easy to clean up! Eventually I'll put slate down or tile.

Too much heat will kill them.

How often do you clean your crix bin out and what size are they? I think the smaller ones, their bins can be cleaned 1 x a week and not be too smelly, whereas the larger ones, you'd almost have to clean them out more often. The larges ones I had CAME smelly. Maybe that's normal with larger ones.

You could always try a stick-up and place them around to help with the smell LOL!

That's what I thought. I clean the cages out everytime I run out of them, which is weekly, but really depends on Zeffie and Eros. This week they're not really eating any of the crickets I put in their cage, I think I spoiled them too much with hornworms and silkworms xD. The ones that are in the big tanks are halves. Pachinko and Carrot, on the other hand, eat quarters. Since those two are still babies, they eat a TON, and we go through those pretty fast. They are kept in a mini cricket keeper, but I'm planning on switching them into my big cricket keeper because I use the tanks for the halves now. So that is cleaned out every few days or so? It really depends on how hungry the babies are.

And I was actually thinking of getting those glade plug in things or whatever they are xD. I figure that they would atleast help. Seriously though, I can't smell whatever he smells. xD I don't really get what my dad is talking about tbh. :mrgreen:

I'm also thinking of ditching the crickets and opting for a better, less stinky, easier-to-take-out-of-the-tank-at-night feeder. It really sucks having to scoop out all the uneaten crickets in each tank at the end of the day when all you want to do is sleep x_x. Especially the quarters. Those things are hard to catch.

Try Dubia or Discoid roaches. Just tell you parents they're "exotic beetles."

I want to, but Dubia are illegal in Florida, and I'm trying to find someone who will ship Discoids here. lol

Do you mean that, while super-restrictive CA, who won't let me keep a little gerbil, will let me breed Dubias, but Florida won't?

You could try bathing them dailey and train them to poop in the bath...then just flush it.....I keep my cricket bin in the basemaent.
