Break out your tape measure and measure the space between his eyes. The crickets shouldn't be bigger than that. That's just one reason I prefer ordering online, because I can choose actual sizes, not just "small" or "large".

Yep, this! :) That in between period between the small and large crickets that most pet stores offer is just one more reason to order on-line (aside from the whole "you'll save a bundle" issue). When our girl was 13 inches, we were feeding 1/2 inch (I always like to go slightly smaller than the space between the eyes, for safety). We switched to 3/4 inch at 15 inches and she is still eating those now, perfectly and happily at 16+ inches.

If your pet store is anything like ours here, the large would be too big for a 13 inch beardie, as our pet store larges are 1 inch and beyond.

Just my .02 for what it's worth!

i think the large crix may may be too big for him:/ and i am NOT by any means measuring those damn things. they look like gigantic like. spiders. lmfao. and i dont have a problem with the small/medium ones but the large. no way. so ill just stick to what i know:p

Gigantic spiders , more like disgusting cockroaches !! I'm lucky enough to live very close to a reptile store. they have all size crickets . usually regular pet stores only have 2 size crickets , small and large. it gets to the point that small are too small, but the large are too large. your beardie could probably eat 3/4 size crix, my beardies are 15 and 16 inches and they've been eating 3/4 crix for awhile now, probably since they've been 13 inches, and i have no problems. if you give your beardie larger crickets you probably won't go thru them as fast either, since the bigger ones are meatier and your beardie won't require as many.

i know that they would last longer, but the large at my petstore are like an inch long, and that is much bigger then the space between his eyes:/

i know how people love the space between the eye trick. get 12 large crickets, its not pricey and i bet your beardie will love the more. mine once they are about 9 inches go right to the largest and i never have problems. im not saying that whoever made up the eye trick isnt right but i know from experience it wont hurt them at all and itll fill them up more quickly and they enjoy the hunt of the larger ones more. i feed them also pretty small roach nymphs. if you look at a dubia roach male, and try to make it smaller than your adult beardies eyes to feed it to him, then lol. its never gonna happen.

mgtorrice, I think you're much better off going with the medium sized crickets. If the cricket looks too large, better off not chancing it. The hardest part to get down on a large cricket is the hind legs and if they get stuck, you have a problem and I don't think anyone would want to have to go after a cricket that is wedged in their beardies mouth or throat. I have heard about them choking on feeders that are too large quite a few times. So, mgtorrice, you're doing the right thing since you don't want your beardie to have any problems digesting them either. Ordering online where there is a size chart is always helpful too, just judging by eye. Also, the large crickets make a LOT of noise.

Im sorta new here and Im gting a lot of new information about feeding just by reading other peoples posts. It has been grate! There is just one thing though....I have never in my life known a bunch of adults who talk about bugs as much as kids do! I find this verry amusing.
So thanks for the information and for the lagphs. Lisa and Puff

LOL - Due to a bobble on my part, I lost a few crickets (3/4 inch) earlier this summer when transferring them from their shipping container into the rubbermaid I use to house them. A couple of weeks later, I had some lovely cricket singing in my yard and have, nightly ever since. I live in the city. :? I can hear people walking by at night and wondering why there is ONE house on their entire city block with crickets singing. "Did she bring those in on purpose, for a little country ambiance perhaps?" :laughing6:

Welcome. :D

Indeed, I'd say the two most oft talked of subjects around here are bugs and poop. :? We are quite the colorful crowd!

Hope you stick around a long time, and join in!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
