Sick Beardie after Ivomec UPDATE Samson Passed Away

Hello,

I agree, you can't let him continue to lose weight, so trying to get nourishment into him is very important right now. I am sorry that he does not like it though.
What types of foods are you using again? Perhaps we can change the formula to something he might like more?
At least he is somewhat energetic though, even though he is still sleeping alot. What type of lighting are you using?

Bright white heat bulb (basking 104 right now) and reptisun 10.0. I'm trying herbavore crit care which he hates now. Babyfood organic squash, sweet potato, chicken # 2. I've juiced greens in my juicer and droppered it to him. I've blended bugs (cricks and waxworms) & mixed with critical care. He won't take things off his nose. I usually squeeze some jumpstart into the side of his lip, that I can get him to chew.

Do you think that if he gets hungry enough he will eat on his own? I fill his cage everyday with goodies and he doesn't touch them. I know that if he wanted to eat he could because he sure does have enough energy to fight me when I'm feeding him!

Hi. How is Samson doing? I had to take Cinnamon back to the vet today and I asked her about them eating on their own again. She said that some will start eventually but some you have to continue feeding them "till the end of time." Oh My God.

Today I could only get about 1 1/2 cc in him. I tried to cram a waxworm into his mouth and he flung it across the room. He's alert, looks around and runs across the bed. It would be a shame at this point if he got worse due to his not eating. I dont' know what else I could try giving him...

That is ok, 1 1/2 cc is a decent amount of food. There is nothing else you can get into him. Continue to try & get foods into him, even if he wants to fling it across the room! :lol:

Yay!! Samson had the first normal looking poo I've seen in a while. Not the biggest poo by any means, due to the lack of food, but nonetheless! Not super smelly, not a weird color, with urates...I know it's silly to be excited about a piece of poo, but that's definately a positive!!

I got about 2 1/2 cc in him today. He still seems a bit wobbly at times on all fours, but he's super alert and looking around. I guess I need to focus on the positive considering almost a month ago, when I took him into the vet, everyone thought he was dead. He was almost dead. He's making progress!!!

He was tapping the glass with his nose looking at me last night, so I pulled him out and laid him on me to sleep for awhile. He's gotten quite used to that especially since he's been sick. He likes my big soft blankie!

Thank you all so much for your coaching and encouragement. It really does help with the frustration during the slow progress!

Tomorrow, we'll try and have 3cc, ...or better yet, maybe some waxworms or crickets & mustards!! Cross your fingers!

That is great Samson is doing so much better now, & you got that much food into him today. Just go easy with him & his appetite should begin to come back.
Good that he pooped too & that it looked fairly normal too. I am very happy that he is doing better & starting to snap out of drug toxicity that he had.
Oh so now he is spoiled, sleeping on you since he was not feeling well lately. That is ok. You can wrap him up in his blankie everynight, that is no problem.
Keep us posted on him.

I'm soo glad to read that your beardie is doing so well. Especially after what drug he was given. This is the only thread I've read where a beardie got better after taking Ivomec. All the others were very depressing ending.

Yes, you are right, they normally don't get better after taking Ivermectin. What a lucky boy Samson is!

Hello,

Yes, you have every right to ask the vet what medication is being given, & for what ailment. You are there to get treatment for your dragon, not have to undo what he just administered.
Alot of vets are still using the Ivermectin which just does not serve a purpose for reptile use.
How are things today?

Samson's still the same. Fairly active, alert, poo'd again, very small, but super normal looking.. Totally a positive! Still not eating on his own yet. Also, I've mentioned, he was a bit yellow from all the meds... a little less yellow lately, but still a concern. I hope his liver's ok. I will continue to be positive and when he finally eats on his own, I'll consider that a milestone!! :mrgreen:

Hello!

Great that Sampson is hanging in there right now. Are you using a probiotic such as acidophiliz, benebac, or nutribac to help his appetite? You could also try jumpstart which is an appetite stimulant which is highly effective too.
Keep pushing fluids, & giving baths. Hopefully his appetite will improve for you soon.
A normal looking stool is definitely a plus that is for sure.
